Step into Hemsin's quiet dining room and you'll feel as though you've walked into a tourist café in a sleepy Turkish beach town. Above the kitchen, a mural depicting the attractions of Cappadocia, Ephesus and Istanbul lends kitschy appeal; native-speaking servers, sporting white button up shirts and black pants, are uniformly curt but attentive. On the mezze platter, hummus and eggplant salad prove particularly vibrant while the lamb and chicken shish kebabs are equally smoky entrees. The grilled kofte patties—combining beef and lamb—make for an intriguing alternative for diners who crave a blend of hearty and gamey flavors. Open all day, Hemsin serves gyros and kebab sandwiches in the afternoon (take-out only), and a traditional Turkish breakfast of cheeses, eggs, cucumber, tomatoes, olives, and fresh bread with jam in the morning.
