Profile

Dating from 1938, Bowlmor was the site of television's first bowling shows during the late '50s. But after a multimillion-dollar renovation, this landmark to the golden age of bowling feels contrived. One step away from being a 42nd Street theme bar, it sometimes functions as an Elks Club for media professionals, what with all the corporate bashes (and, once upon a time, launch parties) thrown here. Still, it's a sporty alternative to the usual East Village club circuit. Even if you don't feel like crashing pins, enjoy a Jetsons moment in Bowlmor's restored retro lounge, done up with large orange and brown vinyl booths, wooden-topped tables  and linoleum floors.

Extra

Legend has it that Richard M. Nixon knocked some pins here. And when the Rolling Stones stopped by after a show, Keith Richards threw his ball clear across the lanes.

Monday Night Special

What was once "cool" has now become plastic and lifeless, like some old upper eastside harpy with too much money and not enough personality.
