Profile
English fashion design often conjures up images of scratchy wool plaids and tweed, but that’s not Paul Smith’s style. “I have always loved combining the old and new,” says the Brit, who’s famous for taking classic bespoke-tailored clothing and adding cheeky twists using a rainbow-colored palette. The result of this style-melding is items like a simple sweater infused with flashy purple and brown stripes, a jacket detailed with leather straps and piping, or a navy jacket with a bright-pink lining. And though the bold clothing may be the first thing shoppers notice, Paul Smith also has accessories to match—think aqua flower-shaped cuff links and red dial watches for men, or gray agate teardrop earrings and swirl print purses for women. The Fifth Avenue location carries only the men’s lines, but female fans of Smith’s distinctive collections can hit the 5,000-square-foot flagship Soho store—located in the former Pace Gallery space—which carries all three women’s collections and various pieces for men. The Soho space, spread over several linked rooms, best represents the brand’s vintage-meets-modern eclectic style: antique reclaimed oak floors and vintage books contrast with a steel-clad counter and even pieces of artwork belonging to Smith.
