(The extras cost anywhere from $1.25 to $2.75 each.) Marrakesh
235 E. 53rd St., between Second Ave. and Third Ave.
646-837-0501

Moroccan, Middle Eastern
Most dishes can be prepared one of two ways—as a sandwich or as a platter. The former may be cheaper (and more portable) but the latter arrives on a segmented plastic plate akin to a TV dinner tray. Imagine the Falafel Hummus Combo ($8.50) with its salad in one wedge and stuffed grape leaves in another or forgo that kitschy experience with a straightforward lamb kebab sandwich ($6.50). A Moroccan mint tea ($2.00) complements every meal with authenticity.

Japanese
Sure, you can sup on shumai ($4.75) or chicken teriyaki ($9.75) but the sushi a la carte items are where this restaurant excels. Sea urchin ($3.50), surf clam ($2.25), and king crab ($4.50) promise unadulterated pleasure while signature rolls like the Time Special ($10.25) made of eel, smoked salmon, avocado, cucumber offer more sophisticated flavor. The desserts, such as the ginger ice cream ($1.95), are unexpectedly remarkable.

Wu Liang Ye
338 Lexington Ave., between 39th St. and 40th St.
212-370-9647

Chinese
This Sichuan menu is well-thumbed by lazy roommates and corporate late-nighters who aren't afraid of a meal that can get a bit messy. The slightly greasy scallion pancakes ($3.75) are crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Juicy dumplings—stuffed with steamed vegetables ($5.95) or pan-seared pork ($4.95)—come wrapped in a winningly gooey paste. For a larger appetite, order sauteed chicken with cashew nuts ($8.95) or sauteed beef filets with snow peas ($9.95). Both come with your choice of white or brown rice.
