Big Apple Barbecue Block Party
June 10 and 11 in Madison Square Park
Judging by the throngs who wait an hour or more for a half-rack of ribs or
a pulled-pork sandwich at this annual barbecue hootenanny, you’d think that half of Manhattan’s population migrated north from the Barbecue Belt. So barbecue-starved are the locals, in fact,
that this year host Danny Meyer has secured an extra block (24th Street between Park and Madison) in a futile attempt to meet demand. Between meals, you can bide your time with all manner of porky seminars held at
the nearby Institute
of Culinary Education. Proceeds go to the Madison Square Park Conservancy. (Call 212-228-3585, ext. 25, for information and
to obtain a $125 or $200 “FastPass” card that ensures express service and enough barbecue to hold you until next year.)
