All the Times I Said ‘I Know That Thing’ During This Year’s YouTube Rewind

Eventually, death comes for us all. Every second on this earth is at once a gift, and a step closer to the grave. In other news, YouTube’s annual Rewind video, a retrospective of all of the video trends that happened this year, has arrived, and I’m proud to say that I was not totally lost.

Do you remember the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? I’m talking specifically about the part where the guy drinks out of the wrong grail and he turns to dust instantly and blows away? Every year, the wizards at Google’s YouTube manage to distill that feeling into a single video that doesn’t make me want to die, but does make me feel dead.

Anyhow, here’s a list of all of the things in the video that I recognized, each recognition filling me with a fleeting sense of calm right before the overall confusion of YouTube culture caused my pulse to spike again.

- The solar eclipse
- Stephen Colbert
- Lele Pons
- The BBC dad
- “Despacito”
- Marshmello
- Jay Versace
- Fidget spinners
- A train
- Salt Bae
- The “Shooting Stars” meme
- Chest-camera-app inventor Casey Neistat
- Graveyards and the pervasive stench of death
- “All Star”
- The tea hypnosis from Get Out
- Poppy
- Devastating natural disasters and terrorist attacks
- “I’m the One”
- Jake Paul
- Logan Paul
- Backpack kid
- The “Floor Is Lava” meme

A surprising lack of pregnant Elsas and pregnant Spider-Men in this year’s Rewind. Kind of a huge oversight, in my opinion! YouTube, thankfully, has a big list of everyone featured in the video, which you can scroll through, muttering, “I guess,” to yourself if you’ve got some time to kill.
