Baggage Claim
Whether tiny clutches or oversize sacks, the season's bags will be hard to keep at arm's length.

To get a handle on next season's bags, remember three things: (1) Practicality is key. If designers have their way, you'll be carrying around a capacious bag that's either hand-held (Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, Miu Miu) or suspended from a substantial shoulder strap (Tod's, Bottega Veneta). But, so these bags don't feel too rigid, squashy shapes in soft fabrics rule: shearling (Celine, Ruffo), suede (Hogan), or corduroy (Emporio Armani). (2) Old-fashioned glamour is good. For day, it works best as couture-quality embroidery (Dior) or hand-tooled silver handles (YSL). Gilt chain straps are back (Chanel, Louis Vuitton), as are -- yet again -- vintagey details: jeweled clasps (Chloé), lace (Prada), velvet (Moschino), and beading (Fendi). (3) A reworked classic always looks great. After five years at Hermès, designer Martin Margiela has come up with his first bag for the house, which puts a fresh spin on the timeless Kelly. Its name? The Initial, naturally.
