Mayle
In the past few seasons, Mayle has become Mecca for looks that have made vintage such a hot commodity — femininity, romanticism, and sentimentality — but at Mayle there are no mothballs. Hollywood fashionistas like Shiva Rose and Cameron Diaz are drawn to the line because it manages to be girly without being precious, and the cuts are flattering and sexy. The spring collection takes preppy classics (pastel skirts, shrunken cardigans) and infuses them with a touch of punk, like a bit of black lace or a tiny cut. And the dresses are always ideal for a warm-weather wedding: lace shells over rich silk slips, and light chiffon prints.
(Mayle dress, $498 at Barneys New York, Henri Bendel, and Mayle. Agatha bracelet, $120 at Agatha stores.).

Sportmax
Sportmax always captures the season's biggest trends without looking hackneyed. This spring, for example, Sportmax answers that pressing question: How to pull off the peasant look without coming across as a Grateful Dead nostalgist? The collection is full of Jane Birkin-goes-to-Morocco separates that illustrate how chic and pulled-together hippie style can be when applied sparely. Our favorites are peasant tops with colorful, handworked patches, and tiered skirts of various lengths, which incorporate sheer layers of ivory tulle with embroidered detailing.

Versus
For anyone who loves Versace's plunging necklines and big-haired rich-bitch aesthetic — but doesn't want to look like Jacqueline Susann — there's Versus. Donatella Versace's diffusion line is not necessarily more mellow than the collection line, but it's where to look for wearable pieces with that Euro-babe vibe. Best of the season is a sharp white trench coat, low-waisted, straight-leg trousers, and tiered and patent leather miniskirts. The color palette of pinks, yellows, and grays, with the occasional jolt of green or orange, is a great way to wake up from winter. What you wear underneath (the Donatella devotee, of course, would don a garter belt) is what determines just how Versace you really are.
