Redesign Your Place on the Cheap
Everyone wants a house beautiful that doesn't cost a fortune. Here's where to go to fill your crib.

BY BETH RAPPOLD

Stylish home furnishings that won't break the bank? It can be done. We've put together a list of stores that carry everything from classic pullout couches, funky lampshades, colorful linens, and vintage-looking décor. Some places you've heard of; some will be new discoveries; some are notable for regular sales. But all will help hook up your pad -- affordably.

Antiquarius Imports Warehouse Outlet
This Brooklyn warehouse is one of the city's best-kept shopping secrets. The owners travel all over the world, bring back beautiful relics and sell them at heavily discounted prices. Look for a six-seater dining room table from India ($699) or semi-antique Persian rugs (about $1,250). Stop by the showroom in SoHo, for a smaller selection of upscale items such as minimalist African furniture and hand-woven rugs.
183 Concord St., near Duffield St., DUMBO, Brooklyn; 718-222-2434; www.antiquarius2000.com; open Fri-Sun, 11am-7pm; A, C to Jay St.

Annex Antique Fair & Flea Market
Keep your eyes peeled and arrive early, and you could find yourself taking home an antique table or a vintage chest of drawers. Prices vary (usually anywhere from $50 to $5,000), and selection changes from weekend to weekend, but shoppers have often been known to find incredible deals on furniture and accessories at this upscale flea market. The Annex has movers on site who will transport your find back to your apartment (moving fees vary). And look out for celebs -- Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Bernadette Peters, and Sarah Jessica Parker have recently been spotted on site.
Sixth Ave., from 24th to 27th Sts.; 212-243-5343

Armani Casa
A little more than a year old, designer Giorgio's furniture store carries stylish, albeit pricey, merchandise. Shopper's tip: Armani Casa always has markdowns of about 30% on select items like sofas, tableware, light fixtures, and accessories.
97 Greene St., near Prince St.; 212-334-1271

Bergdorf Goodman
Take advantage of sales starting at 40% off on the linens, kitchenware and select furniture that are found on the seventh floor of the Fifth Avenue style haven. Next to the full-price designer house wares, there's a section of sale items that stays out from January to October.
754 Fifth Ave., at 57th St.; 212-753-7300

Beyond the Bosphorus
This colorful carpet shop has frequent sales on all merchandise. During select times of year you can get up to 50% off pillows and rugs. They clean carpets, too.
79 Sullivan St., near Spring St.; 212-219-8257

City Knickerbocker
Open since 1906, this Hell's Kitchen shop specializes in table lamps, ceiling fixtures, and floor lamps (prices range between $175-$575). For a fancier touch look for Victorian sconces (from $300 per pair), converted gaslights (from $750), chandeliers (from $500), and shades (from $25). The store carries Tiffany's, Gallie, Robert Abbey, and other designer brands at reasonable prices.
781 Eighth Ave., near 47th St.; 212-586-3939; www.cityknickerbocker.com

The City Quilter
With the right material you can do wonders. This fabric shop carries everything from classic solids to '50s-retro prints showcasing poodles. With reasonable prices and a great selection ($5.50 to $10 per yard), the shop attracts fashion students and designers. Don't be discouraged if you never mastered home economics class: The owners offer a vast array of classes in quilting, dying fabric, silk-screening and embroidery (to name a few), which range from $40 to $140.
157 W. 24th St., near Seventh Ave.; 212-807-0390; www.cityquilter.com

Door Store
Since 1953, Door Store has been churning out contemporary and traditional furniture at prices that won't break the bank. These days, you'll find the same good-looking practical designs: stackable shelf units that fit in corners ($209 to $250), library ladders for use on loft beds ($360), and loads of desks and dining tables ($150 to $1,100). They also offer frequent markdowns on sofas and chairs.
Multiple locations. For details, click here.

Fishs Eddy
Need a plate for pennies? A permanent favorite, this store has excellently priced, unused vintage dishes (relics from ocean liners, restaurants, and clubs) as well as designer lines (a limited selection of Cynthia Rowley and Nicole Miller). Dinner plates run from 50 cents to $28 dollars; and a 20-piece flatware set is just $48. Check out the adorable glassware, linens and other oddities like candleholders and knick-knacks.
Multiple locations. For details, click here.

Jennifer Convertibles
Perhaps you've heard of the store before? While not exactly a hidden gem, if you live in a shoebox or have frequent overnight guests, the shop's sofa beds in classic styles and colors are the perfect décor centerpiece. And prices are very reasonable: A dual recliner sofa (about $500) and the denim sofa bed ($799). Jennifer's also carries living room tables and an assortment of lamps.
Multiple locations. For details, click here.

Lighting & Beyond
Sometimes it all boils down to just the right lamp. Where do you find it? Try this huge selection of modern steel floor lamps, ceiling fans, and table lamps. Expect to find trendy and classic fixtures suitable for all price ranges and tastes, as well as a helpful and friendly staff. A basic floor lamp starts at about $39.
35 W. 14th St., near Sixth Ave.; 212-929-2738; www.lightingbeyond1.com

Porthault
Twice a year, these elegant French linens go on sale for up to 70% off. Sheets are usually around $600 for a Queen set. We recommend getting on the mailing list for updates.
18 E. 69th St., near Madison Ave.; 212-688-1660; www.dporthault.fr

Salvation Army
The best location for furniture shopping is at 536 W. 46th St. You'll find inexpensive, mid-to-good-quality starter furniture — sofas, bedding, dressers, wall units, and accessories. Everything has been donated, so look elsewhere for that brand-new bedroom set.
536 W. 46th St., near Tenth Ave.; 212-757-2311

Straight from the Crate
With a large selection of bedroom and living room furniture, it's perfect for any first-time apartment decorator. Sturdy bookcases (starting at $59), high-quality full beds (starting at $495), and an adorable steel table base that fits a glass cover ($50) — perfect as a kitchen table for two — will fill your space without emptying your pockets. Although not as cheap as Ikea or Pier 1, SFTC is reasonable, and with five Manhattan locations, very convenient.
Multiple locations. For details, visit the web site.

Surprise! Surprise!
They've got a little bit of everything, including lamps, shades, kitchen appliances, furniture (a kitchen table is $130-$300), picture frames ($3.25-$40), floor lamps ($34-$130), wine racks, blinds, bookcases, etc.
