The Best Bet

Merci in Paris is what’s called, in retail, a concept shop—an elevated way of saying it’s not a traditional boutique. Inside the airy, enormous store, you can find fresh flowers, Annick Goutal perfumes, mid-century-modern chairs, clothing, books, and, of course, a café—and all the store’s profits are donated to children’s charities. Starting September 10, the Gap is importing a version of Merci to Fifth Avenue for one month only, with eclectic pieces like this aluminum spoon ($20) and vintage pin ($150). Marie-France Cohen, Merci’s co-founder and owner, explains that the Gap’s selection “manages to make 15,000 square feet fit into 500. Therefore it’s the best of the best.” The Merci/Gap store will be open through October 5 (680 Fifth Ave., at 54th St.; 212-977-7023).
