When it’s closed, the new wall-hung Ikea PS Laptop Workstation—part of Ikea’s 2009 line, which is officially debuting in Ikea stores (including the new one in Red Hook) right now—looks like an unassuming box. But when you pull down its front panel, it becomes a mini-desk that accommodates even big-screen laptops. Four smaller cubbyholes provide storage space for gadgets, and the horizontal compartment at the bottom, a hiding place for chargers and power bricks, is big enough to accommodate a surge-suppressing outlet strip. It’s available in glossy, epoxy-coated white or red. And because it’s made of steel—the PS line borrows from the aesthetic of school lockers—it’s totally sturdy, unlike a lot of Ikea crap. If you don’t like the school-locker look, the also-new Ludvig Laptop Workstation is another option, made from sleek cabinet material (foil-coated particleboard, in white only). Both PS and Ludvig, by the way, have elastic straps inside to hold your laptop in a vertical position, which makes them convenient charging stations when you shut their front panels.

$59.99 for the PS Laptop Workstation and $79.99 for the Ludvig Laptop Workstation at Ikea.com.
