The Best Bet


By now, you’ve probably burned through your Mother’s Day–gifting cache of candles, cardigans, and salad tongs, so it can’t hurt (much) to give Mom something counterintuitive this year. For instance, a croquet set ($200 at Prep World, 1 Little W. 12th St., at Ninth Ave.), which hits the maternal sweet spot of light exercise and noncombative family together time. This sturdy wood set was designed by Tommy Hilfiger, a guy who looks like he’s swung a mallet or two, and is available May 5–8 at his pop-up shop in the meatpacking district, where you can easily grab a cardigan as a backup plan.
