Among the retail victims still reeling from the storm are two beloved bookstores: Printed Matter, Inc. in Chelsea and Brooklyn’s powerHouse Arena. The former is soliciting donations via its website (printedmatter.org), while the latter has planned a “Sandy Hates Books” fund-raiser (November 17, noon to 9 p.m.; 37 Main St., nr. Water St., Dumbo; 718-666-3049) featuring readings by Jennifer Egan, Téa Obreht, and Rick Moody. The event aims to recoup some of the store’s approximately $50,000 in lost inventory; at the height of Sandy’s wrath, floodwater pounded the Arena, shattering its front door, toppling bookshelves, and turning the 5,000-square-foot space into a swampy, pulpy nightmare. The surprise deluge even forced the powerHouse crew to postpone the opening of its first outpost, pictured above, in Park Slope (1111 Eighth Ave., nr. 11th St.; 718-666-3049, ext. 102) until later this month.
