First came shops in shipping containers. Then, in June, creative agency Alldayeveryday charted another unlikely retail locale, transforming a subway newsstand at the Lorimer L station into an art shop called The Newsstand (open through November 30; 718-387-5315). The store stocks everything from $1 zines to a $200 framed still life by Rolling Stone photographer Jason Nocito. Starting mid-October, a much larger retailer—none other than fast-fashion juggernaut Uniqlo—will follow suit, opening a pop-up store on the east end of the Union Square station (through Christmas; no phone). Smaller-scale versions of the brand’s signature stark white shelves will house winter staples including a rainbow of puffer jackets ($50) and patented HeatTech long johns ($20). The gift with each purchase is a $5 MetroCard.
