A Tale of Two Canal Streets

Multitasking designers Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos, creators of Americana-inflected menswear as well as furniture and a coffee-table-book imprint, have often found inspiration in the clamorous Canal Street vendors they pass on the way to their studio. Which explains the location of the first-ever Shipley & Halmos pop-up (385 Canal St., nr. W. Broadway; no phone), open February 4 through 23. In addition to selling the brand’s spring 2014 collection, including sun-faded blue cotton button-downs ($195) and slightly shrunken cotton-linen blazers ($595), the shop will carry neighborhood-appropriate kitsch—from shot glasses ($5) to foam hands ($15) to graphic tees that say GREETINGS FROM CANAL ST. ($50).
