For the Strand Book Store’s first-ever pop-up, the literary institution has unloaded an array of rare vintage tomes on the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Thrift Shop (1440 Third Ave., nr. 81st St.; 212-535-1250; running September 19 to 22). Signed books including a first edition of Norman Mailer’s The Time of Our Time ($20), an embossed copy of Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions ($300), and a leather-covered edition of Damien Hirst’s first monograph ($1,200) are showcased beside such antiques as a Tiffany-style stained-glass lamp ($350) and a high-back chair with a red velvet seat ($650). A portion of the proceeds will benefit Sloan-Kettering; the archetypal Strand tote bag will be available for purchase in various designs.
