Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed (that’s four-to-five-star reviews and lots of ‘em) products and single out the most convincing. While we’ve written about plastic wine glasses, an instant wine chiller, a wine tray for the bath, and Joanna Goddard’s favorite wine glasses before, we’ve gone deep here on the best wine decanters and carafes you can find on Amazon. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.)

Best Crystal Wine Decanter Under $50

4.8 stars, 502 reviews

“Nice thick glass and sturdy base. A 750 milliliter bottle fills to the widest section of base. The taper on the neck allows for easy pouring. I have tried a handful of reds. There is a marked improvement between a glass from a just-opened bottle and one that has been allowed to breathe in this decanter. Looks nice on the bar, too.”

Best U-Shaped Glass Wine Decanter

5.0 stars, 256 reviews

“I’ve wondered for some time if a wine decanter would be a worthwhile investment. After receiving [this one], all I can say is: WOW. Upon unboxing the item, my first impression was, ‘What a beautiful piece of glass.’ My next thought: ‘I can’t wait until this evening to open a bottle and try the decanter out!’ Well, I was not disappointed. The crystal is ‘crystal clear’ and a full quarter-inch thick at the upper edge. Standing almost 11 inches high, the decanter is an impressive object on the dining-room table. The best part is that it really works. With a 750 milliliter bottle of wine poured into the 11-inch diameter belly, roughly 50 square inches of air contact is obtained. Compare that to uncorking a bottle and waiting for it to breathe through a cork-sized opening. I’m not impressed easily, but the quality and utility is terrific. I’m a happy camper!”

Best Pierced Glass Wine Decanter

4.5 stars, 137 reviews

“I needed a third decanter, but didn’t want to spend the $150 for a famous-brand one. This has been perfect for my purposes. Because of the hole, it’s very easy to use with only one hand. Also, you can add some additional aeration by pouring the wine from the bottle onto the top of the donut hole. I highly recommend this product.”

Best Mechanical Wine Aerator With Glass Decanter

4.7 stars, 476 reviews

“If you love wine, you’ll love this. It’s sexy-looking, functional, works like a magic trick, and best of all you can return the unused wine to the bottle (I don’t seem to have that problem). Attach the bottle upside down and then invert it upright, and watch the show as the wine coats the entire surface of the glass. Gather your friends and do a blind taste test. The improvement is noticeable as the flavor is a bit more smooth and crisp. Makes a great gift.”

Best Glass Wine Carafe With Acrylic Aerator

4.5 stars, 181 reviews

“Hubby and I love how this makes a young, unaged, or only briefly aged red wine taste much nicer. The wine opens up when this device is used, and the aerated wine tastes similar to a somewhat older red wine: more mellow, softer. Best of all, we get better-tasting red wine in under a minute! Before this device, if we wanted similar results of aeration, we had to open our bottle of wine 1 to 2 hours in advance of serving, then decant and swirl or even double decant, and wait 30 to 120 minutes. Not anymore!”

Best Wine Aerator and Decanter Spout

4.6 stars, 2,150 reviews

“Was pretty surprised, but this is easily a five-star product. The wife and I are red wine lovers. I bought this thinking that it would make good wine better, and it delivers. The aeration really softens the wine (especially if you’re drinking younger reds with higher tannins). It’s a heck of a lot faster and easier than decanting or pouring and waiting. I like that you are able to aerate only what you want to drink at that time. The spout is solidly built. I don’t think it’s going to break under normal usage. Also, it washes easily. Highly recommended.”

Best Simple Glass Wine Carafe

4.7 stars, 334 reviews

“It’s a heavy duty and simple wine carafe. Holds one liter, arrived in perfect condition, and looks pretty sharp — especially for the price! I don’t know enough about wine to taste the difference in letting the wine breathe in here, but it sure does go a long way in hiding a cheap bottle from your company. It is easy to clean so long as you have a small pair of hands in the house, otherwise I typically just rinse out with soap right after using it, before the wine dries.”

Best Glass Wine Carafe with Wooden Stopper

4.5 stars, 152 reviews

“I bought this as a Christmas gift for my mother, who is REALLY hard to shop for and isn’t afraid to let you know when she doesn’t like something. She does enjoy home goods and wine, so I gave this carafe a shot. I was a little worried that the glass would look cheap at such a low price, but it was fine. The oak stopper was also nice and protrudes enough that you don’t struggle to remove it. It’s a bit more unusual than the standard carafe and [is] quite simple and beautiful. My mom loved it and used it during the Christmas party that same night so she could show it off to everyone.”

Best Plastic Wine Decanter and Saver

4.2 stars, 390 reviews

“This product has worked great for us. We have put everything from a $10 bottle of mixed red to a $60+ bottle of Pinot Noir in it, leaving one in there for up to a week and a half. The wine was always drinkable, almost the same as coming out of the bottle fresh. Regarding the engineering of this item, it is simply genius. Air is what destroys wine. Trying to vacuum it all out never actually totally works, but if you put something BETWEEN the air and the wine, it is very effective. We have LOVED this product and are looking at getting one as a present for another wine-loving relative.”
