The Best Space Heaters on Amazon, According to Hyperenthusiastic Reviewers

Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed (that’s four-to-five-star reviews and lots of ‘em) products and single out the most convincing. While we’ve written about steam mops, air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, and slow cookers, we’ve gone deep here on the best space heaters you can find on Amazon. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.)

Best overall electric space heater

Lasko 5409 Oscillating Ceramic Heater With Thermostat
$41 at Amazon

“This is the best space heater I have ever had. I’ve tried many different types of plug-in heaters but none have been as reliable or as easy to use as this one. I turn this heater on and set it to oscillate and it circulates the warm air all over the house. I would recommend this heater to anyone looking for something reliable and safe to use. It’s very easy to operate and there is a handle on the back of the unit for easy moving. The cord is pretty long so you can extend it out quite a bit.”

Best personal ceramic space heaters

Lasko #100 MyHeat Personal Ceramic Heater
$20 at Amazon

“Wow, this thing puts off a LOT of heat, for such a small heater! I was expecting some mild heat, but no, in only 30 seconds or so, this little guy really got toasty! I use it to keep my hands warm while using a keyboard or mouse, and I had to move it further away because it was making my hands too hot! The sides, top, and bottom all stay perfectly cool, so you don’t have to worry about burning yourself if you want to pick it up or move it. Forget heated keyboards or fingerless gloves, if you want to keep your hands warm while using a computer, get yourself one of these!”

Crane USA Personal Space Heater
$30 at Amazon

“My 15-year-old trusty personal space heater at work finally died a few weeks ago, and I spent the better part of a day researching a replacement for it on Amazon. I finally decided on this one, and boy am I glad that I did. The size is ideal, it’s constructed well and looks great. It is much quieter than my old one and it puts out a lot more heat as well. This little friend heats up my entire office in less than an hour. I feel as though I hit a home run on this purchase.”

Best design-friendly ceramic space heater for small spaces

Honeywell HCE200B Uberheat Ceramic Heater
$37 at Amazon

“I love this little heater! Firstly, it’s pretty adorable, and secondly, it heats up a room super quickly. I don’t find it to be overly loud, but if you’re comparing it to a radiant unit, there’s no contest. (Think fan, not hair-dryer volume.) The mechanism to turn it off when tipped is super sensitive, in a good way — I won’t ever worry about a pet or someone’s kid knocking it over and burning everything I own. No hellfire equals five stars!”

Best oscillating tower space heater

Lasko 5309 Electronic Oscillating Tower Heater
$43 at Amazon

“This is a POWERFUL little bugger. Within minutes the ambient temperature in a room is noticeably higher, within half an hour you don’t need it anymore, and within an hour you’re HOT! This thing has a small footprint, you can put it on a desk or counter as easily as you can leave it on the floor and it’s effective and unobtrusive. I’m not sure what material it’s made out of, but the air pushed through it can be sweltering hot while the front grate remains cool to the touch — which means the likelihood of a fire resulting from this heater tipping over is very slim.”

Best space heaters for large rooms

Infrared Dr. Heater Portable Space Heater
$103 at Amazon

“LOVE it … so much I’m considering getting a second one. It looks good, kind of retro like an old radio or receiver. It produces enough heat to significantly warm up a room or area. It’s lightweight, so it is easy to move from place to place, and it has casters, so it can even just be rolled around. It seems much safer than some of the older space heaters where you can really burn yourself by picking it up. This one has a nice power-off button and mode settings, so you can set it at, like, 70 degrees Fahrenheit and it will turn off when that temperature is reached. Easy to shut off, too, because it immediately begins cooling down, unlike older ones that stay hot for a while after, leaving you worried about fires.”

Bionaire Silent Micathermic Console Heater
$89 at Amazon

“Don’t let the small size fool you, this heater produces a robust amount of heat. Brilliant design splits the surface area of the heating panels and angles them so they fit in a smaller unit. This one produces much more heat and has been more reliable then some of my other heaters which are wider and taller. At its highest setting it heats a small- to medium-size room comfortably within about 30–60 minutes, but it starts producing heat immediately, almost like a radiant heater but not as intense. Makes virtually no noise. Had a few misses before I stumbled on this model and definitely recommend it!”

Best natural gas space heater

Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU Vent-Free Blue Flame Natural Gas Heater
$205 at Amazon

“Great heater, better than I expected having owned a similar unit years ago. Uncomplicated and reliable, easy to hook up, and after initial use no smells or fumes unless you really look for them. The burner is like the burner on a gas stove. The thermostat on the unit works better than I expected it to, and it cycles the unit off and on to maintain a comfortable temperature.”

Best oil space heater

DeLonghi Safe Heat ComforTemp Portable Oil-Filled Radiator
$89 at Amazon

“Works exactly as expected. I let it run outside for a couple of hours when I first received it, to burn off the outer coating, and since then, there’s been no smell. I use it in the bedroom on cold nights and it keeps the room exactly where I want the temperature to be. It feels very sturdy and seems to be a unit that will last for a long time. The fins do get pretty hot, so it might not be great for areas with small children or rambunctious pets that might run into it, but it seems completely safe otherwise, and doesn’t feel like it would tip over if lightly bumped.”

Best portable gas space heater

Mr. Heater F232000 MH9BX Buddy 4,000-9,000-BTU Indoor-Safe Portable Radiant Heater
$70 at Amazon

“I love it! It does the trick for us in our 25-foot RV when we are dry-camping and don’t have hookups and need to conserve our battery. I bumped it with my toe, and it shut off. Nice and safe. It never once set off our carbon-dioxide alarms in our RV and ours are very sensitive. The front does get hot, so kids beware. I noticed that the small propane bottles don’t last as long as promised. I would say three hours on low and maybe two max on high, in my experience. Lighting the thing was easy. The pilot comes right on and it works flawlessly. It does smell a little the first time you use it. Glad I bought it. Helped us get through a week in cold Yosemite without hookups.”

Best faux-fireplace space heaters

Touchstone Onyx Wall Hanging Electric Fireplace
$280 at Amazon

“This thing is absolutely mesmerizing. Very few products live up to the hype, and the Touchstone Onyx electric fireplace hit it out of the park. It cranks out serious heat, so I’m super happy that the flames and heater can function independently, because I’ve been sitting in 90-degree weather all day with this thing on just so I can watch the flames. The flames are spectacular and realistic, and particularly stunning at night. If you’re thinking about buying one, do it. You will NOT be sorry!”

Duraflame Infrared Quartz Fireplace Stove With 3D Flame Effect and Remote Control
$165 at Amazon

“The flames look better than any of the other brands I saw in stores. The 3D logs really make the difference, and the beveled glass helps the illusion. The sides and top stay cool to the touch, so it would be safe for critters and kiddos. I ordered this for my master bedroom. Since it’s farthest away from the main thermostat, it tends to be a bit cooler than the rest of the house. So far it works great to warm up the bedroom, and I can use the timer shut off and not worry about having a space heater running while sleeping.”
