Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed (that’s four-to-five-star reviews and lots of ’em) products and single out the most worthwhile. While we’ve looked into sofa start-ups, couches for a grand or less, the best office chairs on Amazon, and even an office chair that makes you look like a frog, we’ve yet to cover massage chairs. Here, the best massage chairs and recliners available on Amazon. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.)

Best full-body massage chair

Relaxonchair Full Body Zero Gravity Shiatsu Massage Chair
$1,699 at Amazon

“The Relaxonchair is one of the best buys I have ever made. I have had it for two months now and am amazed with the results. I am a 73-year-old man. It has increased my range of motion. I had chronic back pain that came and went for 20 years after a car wreck and had to use a zero-gravity chair to get relief. I could not sit in a straight-back chair for more than 30 minutes at a time. The pain is now almost gone and I can do things I could not do before. The compression massage on my hip and calf have increased blood circulation and reduced pain in that area.”

Best compact massage chair

Kahuna Massage Chair Space-Saving Zero-Gravity Full-Body Recliner
$1,900 at Amazon

“I’ve only had the chair for five days, so I can’t speak to longevity, but I absolutely love it! I had polio as a child, I have three vertebrates fused, and I’m in a constant state of ‘hurt.’ I detest painkillers, and while massage is helpful, I lack access and funds, so I look wherever I can for relief. This massage chair does that in spades! I limit myself to 15 minutes in the morning, and 15 in the late afternoon, and it is simply blissful for me. It’s not inexpensive, I had to ‘save up’ to order it … but the purchase is one of the best moves I’ve made in a long, long time! If you suffer back pain, judicious use of the chair will help you … it did me!”

Best massage chair under $1,000

Electric Full Body Shiatsu Brown Massage Chair Recliner Stretched Foot Rest
$800 at Amazon

“I can’t believe I waited 25 years to buy one of these! I actually bought two! This is the new hit at my house. People come over and use these and never want to leave! The quality is top-notch. The material feels like a soft leather. The control pad mounts to the right side of the chair and can be removed from the holder. The holder is fully adjustable and moves to any location desired. They really are intense. They have four intensity levels, and they hit everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. Even on the lowest setting they rough me up! I am very comfortable in these chairs. You are missing out on the finer pleasures in life if you don’t buy these at this amazing price!”

Best massage chair with fancy settings

Top Performance Kahuna Superior Massage Chair
From $2,600 at Amazon

“LOVE IT! I have used it every day and I have to say my favorite feature is the foot massage. I had no idea how much my feet were aching for a good massage until this chair got ahold of them. Sweet bliss! Out of the nine different automatic massage settings, I have used Relaxation, Pain Relief, Senior Mode, Yoga Stretch, and the quick relaxation. I have to remind myself to put the chair into zero gravity before I start an auto program. I have not used the heat yet, but my son has and he says it gets pretty warm. My husband loves the hand and forearm massage. I have to say this is by far one of our best family purchases. Looking forward to my massage each day.”

Longest-session massage chair

Ideal Massage Full Featured Shiatsu Chair With Built-in Heat Zero Gravity Positioning Deep Tissue Massage
$1,280 at Amazon

“We are in our mid-40s and this is one heavy chair. The good news is, now that your back is hurting so bad from lifting so much weight, you can sit in your massage chair and get a massage. The chair was an easy setup. It massages for 30 minutes, which at first may hurt like heck, but give it a few minutes and it will work that spot out that’s hurting and then it just feels great. I have sat in the chair for 30 minutes every day since receiving it. I missed one day of getting in the chair and when I woke up the next morning I was hurting, so I will not miss another day.”

Best affordable massage chair

Best Choice Products Faux Leather Massage Recliner Chair With Ottoman
$205 at Amazon

“This replaced a $700 massage chair that I had for years. It is way more comfortable, doesn’t need eggshells in between and the cover blanket to soften the massage balls, and is equally as effective if not more since it has heat. I am a programmer, so I spend more time in this chair than anywhere. The only thing I lament is that it doesn’t have a nice spot under the center for my kitties to nap like the old one, but they’ll adapt.”

Best swiveling massage chair

Esright Massage Recliner Chair Heated PU Leather Ergonomic Lounge
From $287 at Amazon

“For the price, this item is a really good value. The chair arrived within a few days of ordering. It was a snap to put together. The recline/swivel/rock mechanism seems very solidly built. Reclines as advertised. Leg rest is very sturdy, and the rocking/swivel is smooth. Based on other reviews, I was not expecting much from the massage, but was pleasantly surprised. It’s really a very comfortable chair. I work at a computer all day with two monitors. It’s easier for me (and better on my back) to work in a relaxed or reclined position (like at a dentist’s) rather than hunched over at a desk. I am reclining in my new chair as I type this. So far, so good.”

Best massage seat cushion

Naipo Back and Neck Massager Shiatsu Massage Chair Seat Cushion
$150 at Amazon

“I’ve used similar-looking massage-chair cushions as well as very expensive recliner massage chairs, this product punches well above its price range. The rollers are strong, precise, and they get all deep in that back tissue. The best part? The remote. I love how precisely it allows you to target various areas of the back.”
