Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)

And while we’ve written about lots of sunscreen — including moisturizers with SPF, sunscreen for your face, and baby sunscreen  — here we’ve rounded up the best natural sunscreens, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.

Best-rated natural sunscreen

Sun Bum Original Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 70 Lotion

This natural sunscreen caught reviewers’ eyes for being reef-safe, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and waterproof. But even more fell in love with the non-greasy formula that doesn’t leave a white residue and lasts a long time. “This is the best. I bought it for a trip to Mexico and managed, for the first time in my life, to come back from vacation without a burn,” says one reviewer. “It worked all day from one application during a completely cloudless week on the beach, even after multiple trips into the ocean.” Many admitted they were skeptical about the banana scent at first, but most came around, saying it “creates a nice summery vibe.” One reviewer explains, “The best descriptor is a combination of banana and coconut. Might sound gross, but the scent gets an A+ in my book. This is saying quite a bit coming from someone like me, who is generally sensitive to certain fragrances. Also, the smell isn’t too overpowering. It is definitely noticeable, but in a good way.”

Best-rated (less expensive) natural sunscreen

Alba Botanica Aloe Vera Hawaiian SPF 30 Sunscreen

Many love how gentle yet effective this sunscreen is, especially for those with complicated skin conditions. “Having lived with rosacea for a number of years, I’ve learned to be very cautious about what I put on my face and neck,” writes one reviewer. “This sunscreen seems to be working very well for my face and I’m actually using it as a moisturizer on my neck area at night. It is helping to calm the irritation of rosacea along with the dryness.” Another commented that she made it through her 5-day tropical cruise with no sunburn. “It rubbed on easily and was quickly absorbed by my skin without leaving a heavy white residue,” she said. “I also loved the fragrance which to me smelled a lot like a fruity tropical drink.”

And now for some micro-picks of every type of natural sunscreen you might be looking for.

Best tinted natural sunscreen

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Tinted Face Mineral Lotion

For the customers who want coverage in a different way, reviewers fawned over how inexpensive yet effective this tinted face lotion with SPF 50 is. “I was using a $40 tinted mineral sunscreen that I loved, but I really needed to find a more affordable option. I decided to try this sunscreen, but I had pretty low expectations for the quality and performance,” says one reviewer. “I am completely blown away by this $10 tinted sunscreen. It works just as well as high-end products at a fraction of the price. The formula is perfect and doesn’t clog my pores.” Dozens of reviewers rave about how the tint offsets the white cast of the mineral formula. “It goes on feeling moisturizing but dries down feeling dry and smooth, not greasy at all,” writes one reviewer, who notes, “I’ve also found that there is no white cast on my darker skin tone.” It even has this expert’s approval: “I am a nurse in a dermatology office and I have used very high-priced tinted SPF before. Nothing ever has come close to how great my skin looks with this. My face is not greasy at all and I have even stopped applying my daily moisturizer because I love this so much.”

Best tinted natural sunscreen

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Sensitive SPF 30+, 5-oz

Dermatologists also have recommended sunscreen from Australian brand Blue Lizard to the Strategist before, and many Amazon reviewers, often with some serious allergies and sensitive skin, flock to it, describing the formula as gentle, non-comedogenic, and hypoallergenic. “I can’t be in the sun for more than a few seconds during the spring and especially during summertime,” writes one reviewer. “I have to protect myself wearing long sleeves, long pants, and a hat or an umbrella to cover my face up. I was scared to use this sunscreen because I have had bad experiences with different sunscreens in the past. I tested a bit of it on the top of my forehead and went out for the day. I will tell you that I did not get any rashes, bumps or redness on the spot that was covered.” A few disliked how thick the formula was, but most weren’t completely bothered. “ It took a little more effort (only a couple more minutes) to get it rubbed completely into my skin than the chemical sunscreen I typically use, but I didn’t get a sunburn, it didn’t turn my skin pasty white, and no coral were killed,” says one reviewer. Another reviewer considers the fragrance-free formula to be the biggest selling point. “It does not have any smell, which is good for someone like me who can get a headache from a strong-smelling product. I recommend!”

Best natural sunscreen for face

Coola Suncare Mineral Face SPF 30 Sunscreen Matte Finish

The combination of a matte finish and non-greasy texture in this face sunscreen was a major draw for many reviewers. “I can never find a sunscreen that would keep me shine-free and acne-free,” writes one reviewer. “Every time I use facial sunscreen, I always tend to have big zits the next day, but not with this sunscreen.” One person even ditched her makeup primer after starting to use this product: “I live in the south which leads to a lot of humidity and oily skin. This is the first sunscreen that doesn’t end up getting into my eyes by the end of the day. The matte sunscreen not only stays in place but also helps control the shine on my face. Even better, this has also now taken the place of a makeup primer as I have noticed when I wear makeup over this, my makeup stays on longer and fresher-looking than with expensive makeup primer.” On the downside, one reviewer warns that “you have to shake the sh*t out of it when you first use it or else a lot of the oil-water will come out first,” but once it’s blended, she thinks “it’s totally worth it.”

Best natural sunscreen for lips

Supergoop! Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30, Açai

“I needed a sunscreen for long bike trips where I’m in the sun all day. I’ve tried the zinc ones, but they always go on white, are not very moisturizing and I tend not to reapply them. All the non-zinc ones have oxybenzone, which is a known toxin that I especially don’t want to put on my mouth. Enter Supergoop,” writes one reviewer. “Not only is this stuff free of oxybenzone, it’s very moisturizing and has kept my lips sunburn-free after hours in the sun.” Many others rave about the hydrating, thick texture that isn’t waxy. “This reminds me of Vaseline with texture, albeit just slightly easier to spread,” explains a reviewer. “It smells amazing, and it stays on for longer than 15 minutes.” A few didn’t love the sweet açai flavor, but most said it’s barely noticeable and one astutely comments that the açai is actually “an added bonus to keep lips looking young and protected from free-radicals.”

Best natural sunscreen spray

Sun Bum Original Moisturizing Sunscreen Spray

Outdoorsy customers love this sunscreen for how it’s easy-to-use but also effective. One reviewer writes: “I have used this product in many situations. The first was on a level 3 white water-rafting trip. My friends brought traditional lotion sunscreen and were rubbing it on themselves like there was no tomorrow. I, however, had my Sun Bum spray. I finished spraying much faster than they finished rubbing. We got drenched in water many times from head to toe. I could feel the sun’s intense heat warming my skin with no clouds to provide cover. After 4 hours of rafting, I had no burns whatsoever.” Another reviewer, who usually hates sunscreen, found this one actually pleasant to use. “I hate sunscreen but I hate getting burned probably about as much. I really hate smelling like sunscreen and feeling like a grease ball dreading the fact that my face is probably going to break out,” she writes. “While this is on the upper end of what I really want to spend on sunscreen, I can’t help but buy it because I honestly want to wear it. It actually smells amazing.”

Best natural sunscreen for babies

Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen SPF 50+

Lots of reviewers found that this sunscreen made the often-difficult task of applying sunscreen to a baby a little bit easier. “Sunscreen, in general, is sort of a necessary evil. Add the idea of applying to a squirming toddler and you are in for a real workout,” writes one mother, who adds, “Thinkbaby is the real deal. Thinkbaby smells amazing, it spreads evenly and offers awesome protection. My daughter had swimming lessons every single day through daycare this summer (12 weeks). She wore Thinkbaby every single day. She had zero, I repeat, zero, sunburns.” One mother loves this formula for her children with sensitive skin. “My two youngest have terrible reactions to many sunscreens. Most of the baby sunscreens we tried gave them horrible red and inflamed rashes. We finally got a dermatologist referral who said the key is finding something with just zinc oxide, and this fit the bill,” she wrote. “It rubs in easily while still being thick enough that you are confident it is protecting. And the smell is a serious plus.”

Best natural sunscreen spray for babies

Babyganics Baby Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 Spray Bottle

In the comments, many parents seem to swear by this easy-to-apply but effective spray for their kids. “My baby hates having sunscreen put on, so this is nice and quick and only need to apply a couple times if we are planning on being outside all day,” writes one mom. Another parent chose this because it’s not toxic and convenient for travel. “Love that it is a physical sunscreen (as opposed to chemical), so I feel like this is a safe option for babies/toddlers,” she writes. “The bottle is also double-capped for travel purposes. If the outer cap comes off during travel, there is still the inner cap to protect the spray bottle from leaking sunscreen all over. Brilliant!”

Best natural sunscreen for kids

Badger SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen

“This product gives me peace of mind when using on my 1-year-old babe. The ingredients are great and it smells so good,” writes one reviewer. Parents even say the orange scent makes kids excited to put it on. “My favorite part is that it smells like a Creamsicle,” writes one mom. “And because of its scent my 4-year-old cannot wait to put it on and wants to put it on himself. No more fighting him to put it on.” A few complain that the formula is thick and hard to rub in, but to avoid that, one reviewer advises you to “warm it up bit in your hands before putting on a thin layer.” Overall, parents love this, and as one writes, “This sunscreen is a wonderful alternative to chemical-laden sunscreens.”
