Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing. While we’ve written about space heaters, infrared heaters, hand warmers, and electric blankets, here we’re zeroing in on the best propane heaters you can find on Amazon. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.)

Best portable propane heaters

Mr. Heater Buddy 4,000-9,000-BTU Indoor-Safe Portable Propane Radiant Heater

“This thing is amazing! Took it camping in Big Bear during winter and the only way we ended up sleeping at all was because we had one of these bad boys. It’s a great investment and I can see other uses besides camping gear. I used it inside my tent to keep us warm throughout the night and one propane tank lasted a majority of the night on medium setting. Not as effective outdoors when you’re exposed to the elements. Must have for any camper/emergency kit.”

Dyna-Glo 50,000 to 200,000 BTU Liquid Propane Convection Heater

“Holy Heat!! This thing is insane! Imagine standing beside a jet as it takes off, this thing throws heat like a Nolan Ryan fastball. This is not for the faint of heart!!!!”

Mr. Heater Radiant Cabinet LP Heater

“Mr. Heater is absolutely a lifesaver on those super cold days … when you just can’t get warm, and the furnace is on overload … Mr.Heater will warm your room and your bones. I personally do not like to keep my thermostat very high. I like too keep the rest of my house rather cool. I only keep the rooms I am using warm and comfortable. Mr. Heater is nice to have on hand in case the furnace would stop working, or if you would loose power… on a 20 degree day. I must have heat! A propane tank last about 72 hours if you burn it on low … and low throws off a lot heat. My Mr. Heater gives me piece of mind … just knowing I will always have heat … no matter what!”

Mr. Heater Little Buddy 3800-BTU Indoor Safe Propane Heater

“This little guy gives a lot of heat when it’s freezing cold outside. Used it for a three-night camping trip this weekend and turned it on when we got into bed, let it drain, switched out the tank, and was awesome to have to wake up with. The propane tanks last about five hours. If you tip it, it will immediately shut off. Best investment this year in regards to camping supplies.”

Best forced-air propane heaters

Mr. Heater 60,000 BTU Portable Propane Forced Air Heater

“This thing is AWESOME! I have a 28’x28’ un-insulated detached garage/workshop with a 10’-high foamboard ceiling. My first impression was that it is really well built and sturdy … and heavier than expected, which to me is a good thing. I was thinking, this is so small, how can it really put out enough heat for my shop?! Hooked up my 20lb grill tank and plugged it in, which started the fan and igniter. Fan is very quiet and smooth. Pushed the red button for a few seconds and away it went. Beautiful blue flame and I could feel the heat waves from 20’ away … set on low. I normally heat my shop with a wood stove, but it took forever for it to get hot and start to make a difference. This heater raised the temp from 50 to 60 degrees in about 15-20 minutes at the farthest distance away from thermometer, on the low setting. For me, this is a home run!”

Dyna-Glo 30,000-60,000 BTU Liquid Propane Forced Air Heater

“This thing has been a game-changer for me. After years of working out in an unheated freezing cold weekend garage gym I bought this product. I tried a series of forced air electric heaters and they were worthless in my two car garage (that also has a high ceiling). Now I can comfortably do work outs in a t-shirt and even break a sweat out there in the middle of winter. We recently had a severe cold snap (below zero) and this heater did the job; I think the garage was almost as warm as the house, and we keep the house at around 72 F. The only down side, if you consider it a down side, is that this unit is very noisy; it doesn’t bother me — I’ll take the noise over the cold all day. Also, it does chew through propane; so I just bought an extra tank to have around so I don’t run out. Highly recommended.”

Best wall-mounted propane heaters

Dyna-Glo 18,000 BTU Liquid Propane Infrared Vent Free Wall Heater

“I love this heater. It is the main heat source for my cabin. The infrared heat warms you deep inside, like standing in front of a fire without any smoke.”

Camco Olympian Wave-6 6000 BTU LP Gas Catalytic Heater

“LOVE this heater. We have a 28-foot Airstream travel trailer and dry camp often. This is an efficient gas heater that will keep you toasty warm in cold weather. We use this in the living area of the trailer only as we sleep with windows open under down comforters in the bedroom. Be sure to buy the right size for your heated area. Be sure to keep it covered to protect from dust so the heating pad doesn’t become contaminated. Don’t need electricity hookup to run. No drain on batteries. Mounts right on the wall without offset requirements.”

Best tank-top propane heaters

Mr. Heater 30,000-45,000 BTU 540 Degree Tank Top Heater

“I’ve purchased several styles of heaters that attach on the top of a propane tank. This unit is by FAR the best made. Unlike the other style units, this one lights super easy and stays lit. It also thumps out some serious heat. Quality product!”

Texsport Portable Outdoor Propane Heater

“This really helps me find the motivation to sit outside on a cold day and vend at arts markets. When I vend I have no access to electricity and dannnng it gets so cold. To event organizers, the large propane heaters seem like a massive fire hazard. I bring this with me and no one even notices I have it. It always lights up easily and propane cans can last be about two markets each (around 12 hours on/ off use). This is perfect to keep next to a chair as you sit outdoors.”

Mr. Heater Double Tank Top Outdoor Propane Heater

“Awesome heater for outdoor use. This thing really heats up on a cold winter day. I use it mainly at my kids sporting events when it is too cold and I would otherwise be freezing while sitting in the cold as a spectator.”

Dura Heat Propane 360 Degree Tank Top Heater

“Really works well and throws off a lot of heat in all directions. Used it on my deck in 30-degree weather and was nice and toasty. Now I can enjoy my deck in all weather. My deck is covered and the roof is low therefore cannot use one of the tall heaters. This fits the bill nicely. Small, compact, works on a 20-gallon propane tank. Can use the same tank for the BBQ grill, so no need for extra tanks. It attaches to the rim of the tank. Easy to assemble.”

Best patio propane heaters

Golden Flame 46,000 BTU Hammered Silver/Pewter Patio Heater with Wheels

“Very happy with this propane heater. It is well made and as much as I wanted to get one of the pyramid heaters with the dancing flame, I went with this heater as it was highly rated. Puts out a good amount of heat. I also put this together myself — took me a few hours but I felt a sense of accomplishment — my husband was gone for the weekend so I did it myself.”

Fire Sense Hammer Tone Bronze Patio Heater

“Far surpassed my expectations! I bought this to use for outdoor seating during our Thanksgiving dinner this year. My husband questioned my plan since he had a similar space to heat at work and needed two heaters to do the job. Knowing that most heaters only heat a few feet away, I was initially reluctant to order. So glad I did because this one worked unbelievably well! It kept guests at a 12-person table warm throughout the night. In fact, we had to turn the heater down after a while. Everyone was commenting on the quality and functionality, wanting to know where I purchased. When asked about the cost, they were extremely surprised that it wasn’t much more than what I paid.”

AmazonBasics Commercial Patio Heater

“I LOVE THIS THING! We bought this so we could hang out on our deck in the winter and it does its job very well. I could sit outside in 20 degree weather and be just fine! Most of the time we don’t even have it on the highest setting.”
