Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy (like pillows), but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. While we’ve written about our favorite vacuums, brand-new Dysons, the best handheld vacuums, and best robot vacuums, we dove back in for a more comprehensive look into the best shapes and styles of sucking, according to the people. (Note that reviews have been edited for length and clarity.)

Best upright vacuum under $300

SharkNinja Canister Upright Vacuum, TruePet Mini-Motorized Brush

“WOW, It’s better than what the TV info commercial said! We have four cats and a German Shepard. Even though the house looked clean, the Shark proved it wasn’t. No more moving fur and dust around. I ran the Shark though all sorts of tests. I was able to suck up the dust off of the furniture and fur off of the comforter and drapes. It did a wonderful job on the bare floors. It took up all the dust and dander that my Orek and Kirby left behind. I didn’t have to wash the floor to remove the dust. It picked up all of the cat fur on the dining room chairs where they love to sleep. Worked wonders on the cat stands. It sucked up the dust off of the computer and electronics in the house. I was surprised how much fur and dander came up from the carpets. Even my daughter remarked that after I was done cleaning the house smelled better — cleaner. I didn’t have the fly away dust in the air….that same dust that lands back on the furniture that makes double the work.”

Best upright vacuum under $200

SharkNinja Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away (NV501PR) Upright Vacuum

“I’m a professional with 35 years experience cleaning and this vacuum is by far the best I have used. This model has everything I need to get all the jobs done with minimal effort and excellent results. I need a large capacity dirt holder and this one has it. Just be sure each time you empty it to check the top also as hair and dirt can slow the flow. In addition, it has a long cord so plugging into a certain area gives you maximum cleaning without having to keep moving the cord from plug to plug. The filter is VERY easy to clean…I throw it in the wash with my mop heads! This model comes with a hard floor tool and honestly that is one of the main reasons I choose this model. I have tons of clients with hardwood and animals and this baby does A GREAT job picking up the hair!!! Just keep the tool on ‘carpet’ setting for best results! I could go on and on but basically, the point is, you can’t go wrong with this model!”

Best upright vacuums under $150

Bissell Cleanview Swivel Rewind Pet Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner

“I threw a party for my 5- and 10-year-old. Fifteen kids, all under 10. For some reason I thought popcorn and 18 pounds of kinetic sand was going to be a hit. WELL, it WAS and HOLY cow the mess afterwards! Let me start off by saying, THE SUCTION power on this sucker is GODLY. Perfection. It picked up that 18 pounds of kinetic sand and five bags of popcorn remnants off the entire top floor of my house like it was nobody’s business! I’m not exaggerating, you guys, I have never been so happy about a vacuum purchase in my damn LIFE. Its durable (kids tried using it as a jungle gym and it survived unscathed), it has a crazy good amount of suction, and it’s easier than cake to clean! If you’re looking for the gladiator of vacuums, the Hercules of household cleaners, here it is ladies and gentleman. This Bissell is worth every penny they list it for and more.”

SharkNinja Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe NV360 Upright Vacuum

“We’ve been using this for over a year and it’s completely changed the way I clean our small house. I was set on getting a cordless stick vacuum and ended up changing my mind basically on a whim, and I’m so glad about this choice. Before this we had a decent vacuum that was heavy and always smelled dusty because it was hard to clean, and I dreaded vacuuming. But this exceeded expectations, especially for the cost, and the first time we used it we were truly shocked at how much dust and pet hair our previous vacuum had missed. Like, couldn’t decide whether it was amazing or horrifying. I really like the narrow profile and swivel for getting around furniture. It works really well on our hardwood floors as well as our carpet.”

SharkNinja NV352

“When my previous Shark blew up, I was seriously bummed. But when I got this model I realized it was a blessing in disguise. This baby is GREAT and puts my old stick vac to absolute shame! It sucks up dog hair from four inches away! It has a suction adjustment feature! The canister opens from two sides for dumping debris! The brush tool allows me to dust EVERYTHING and it has been a life-saver as I’ve dealt with drywall and construction dust from a recent home repair and remodel project. It also gets dog hair and dust off of my micro-fiber sofas!!! Seriously, where has this been all my life?”

Best upright vacuums under $100

Bissell Cleanview Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner 1831

“This is the single best thing I have purchased this year; it has literally changed my life. I have a husky that sheds 24/7/365 and I have fought with all types of vacuums in the past. After doing enough research that I could get a job writing owner’s manuals, I decided on this one because a friend recommended it to me and her carpet always seemed clean even with a dog around. I have to admit, I put off getting a new vacuum for a few weeks when the old one finally died, so my place looked like a fur bomb exploded. About five minutes per (large) room with this bad boy and it looked like I had brand new carpet!! I love how easy the canister detaches and the fact that the mechanism for opening/emptying it isn’t easily bumped. I’ve used a friend’s Dyson and honestly I can’t tell a difference, so if you have pets and don’t want to drop a ton of money — this is a life changer!”

Eureka NEU182A PowerSpeed Lightweight Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner

“I can’t imagine rating this vacuum at less than five stars, especially considering the $60 price point. Not sure why it is so affordable, but I’m glad it is. At first glance it does not look particularly fancy or high tech, but this thing absolutely works. The suction is impressive, the unit is lightweight, stores the attachments compactly, and the settings are easy to use. I honestly can’t believe how much it picked up from my carpets. It was also effective for the pet hair on my couches. Noise output is average, cord length seems reasonable — perhaps the hose could be longer for cleaning surfaces overhead, but not a huge concern for me. Overall I could not be more pleased with a product that actually does its job. Seems like a steal at this price. If you’re going to save up for a pricier vacuum in the future, this would be a great interim purchase. I can’t speak to its durability, but for $60, even if it breaks tomorrow I won’t complain.”

Best stick vacuums

Shark Rocket Ultra-Light Corded Bagless Vacuum (HV302)

“Yes, this device has a cord but I’m not spending $400 on a cordless stick vac that may or may not have as much power as this one or a run time of 15 mins per 4 hour charge — gimme a break. I’ve had this now for a couple months and LOVE it. We bought it primarily because we got a puppy and while her hair isn’t that bad yet we always track in grass and debris from taking her outside so often, so it is primarily used on our hardwood floors and our carpeted living room area. This product is exactly what I needed and I’m very happy with the purchase. It’s versatile, powerful and easy to put away. Does a really nice job on our carpeted areas as well. I will recommend this to anyone who asks — great purchase.”

Tineco A10 Hero Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

“This is probably the best review I have ever given a product purchased on Amazon. Finding a good stick vacuum is difficult. We have gone through a couple Dysons (heavy, noisy, and break down after around three years), and another cheaper brand that was ineffective. After combing through the products on Amazon I landed on this little gem. It is, far and away, the very best stick vacuum I have ever owned. I am an older woman, so weight and ease of use, plus effectiveness, are quite important. It is very light and intuitively easy to use. We bought this model because it comes with two batteries, very handy when doing upstairs and downstairs, and has three cleaning heads — multi-floor, hard floor, and stair tool. One of the niftiest features is the five little LED lights on each head. They really show up the dirt, and make me realize how much I was missing with other vacuums. Also, my cats and I are noise sensitive, and it is very quiet. I used it yesterday to vacuum the entire house, and the amount of suction it has is really amazing. I think they thought of everything with this one, and am extremely pleased with my purchase. Please give it a try, you won’t be disappointed, and it will leave Dyson ‘in the dust’ (sorry, couldn’t resist).”

Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

“I didn’t think it was possible to love a vacuum more than my Dyson DC40 but I was wrong. This cordless Dyson Cyclone V10 is everything I wanted and so much more. I have a house full of pets plus a 3-year-old. Animal hair and random messes are a constant thing so I wanted something that was light-weight and easier to pull out than the full size vacuum (in between vacuuming the entire house) but I love this one so much I probably won’t even use the other model anymore! With this newer model, I can easily vacuum my entire sectional couch in less than 10 minutes when before it would take me a minimum of 30 minutes using the detachable hose on the full size. The whole house is also done in a fraction of the time as before. The three power settings are especially handy because I can adjust based on what I’m cleaning. Overall, I’m extremely happy with my purchase. Thank you, Dyson!!” [Editor’s note: The Dyson V10 is a Strategist favorite.]

Best canister vacuums

Miele Pure Suction Canister Vacuum

“This thing actually makes me WANT to clean. I don’t mind cleaning, I actually enjoy it but this thing is a damned dream. This is the best vacuum I have ever and will ever own. It’s lightweight, it stands up straight and the hose attaches to the body of the canister which makes my life so much easier when storing it. It fits under my damn bed, like WHAT. I love this thing. GET ONE YOU NEED IT. The suction is incomparable. Dyson has nothing on this and I have a Dyson as well.”

Bissell Zing Bagged Canister Vacuum 4122

“This vacuum is a life changer!! We put in hardwood floors and I was struggling to keep them clean; it was constant with the sweeping. I am so happy I got this vacuum. I’d give it 10 stars if I could. It was really easy to assemble. The suction is very powerful, it works on hard surfaces and carpet with the flip of a switch, it’s light-weight and moves very easily throughout my home, and the cord seems really long. It is also really easy to take a part and clean the filters! For me, this vacuum was the right choice and I couldn’t be happier!”

Best robotic vacuum

Eufy Boost IQ RoboVac 11S (Slim)

“LOVE everything about this product! Works exactly as described. We have kids, a dog, and cat and this vacuum helps me keep up. Operating time is great, it accomplishes quite a lot and returns to its base for charging. The collection reservoir capacity is fairly substantial given the size of the vacuum and fills up each time its used, even if I just vacuumed with the superior quality upright! It transitions from tile to carpet to rugs with ease and doesn’t fall down the stairs. If a cord or something is accidentally left out and the vacuum gets caught on it, it automatically shuts off. I no longer have to move furniture to vacuum because this one can go under it. I use it at least once and up to three times each day. The price is unbeatable; plus I love the color and remote.”
