What Actress Kelly McCreary Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked actress Kelly McCreary, who stars in Grey’s Anatomy, about the coffee beans, journal, and stretching tool she can’t live without.

A really great, cool journal with guided prompts. It’s basically like a gratitude journal: Every day is the same and you fill in the things you’re grateful for, the things that were great about the day, and the things you want to improve upon the next day. It only takes five minutes, which makes it a good way to end or start a day. Sometimes, my husband and I do it at the same time so we can check in and help each other stay on a positive note.

I don’t know if it’s my skin or living in the California desert, but I crave moisturizing things. I’m a bit of a lip-balm aficionado, and this recent discovery is now my most favorite lip balm. It’s so smooth.

I make my coffee every day. I make it myself so that it’s ready when I get up, because I can’t waste any time before I get to my coffee. These are my favorite beans. My mom first sent them to me as a birthday gift, and they’ve become a household staple. We just have a regular Breville drip-coffee maker, but it’s so awesome. The difference between the taste of this coffee made with my old coffee maker and the Breville is like night and day.

Oh my God, the glow, the moisture! It’s my favorite thing to put on my skin. I use it every day. I always feel fresh and dewy and glowy when I wear it, which is another perk — it’s not only really great for my skin, but also gives me that little confidence boost too. I have super-dry skin, but I occasionally still get zits, so this is a really good balancer. It’s also a really good foundation for all of the moisturizer and sunscreen that I put on top of it. And it works as a primer too. It sort of smooths out my complexion, making makeup go on more easily. That said, after I started wearing it about a year and a half ago, I now love having a naked face as often as possible — basically, whenever I don’t have to wear makeup for work.

I’m a former New Yorker, so I used to have a closet full of boots. But ever since I moved to L.A, I’ve mostly been a sneakers-and-flats kind of girl. I just found these, though, and they’re so comfortable. They go with everything and can go from day to night — the perfect neutral, all-day-everyday boot.

These towels were the first thing I splurged on to class up my bathroom. I’ve had them for the past five years. They’re so nice and super soft.

I collect scents, but oh man, I’m so bad at describing them. This one smells … yummy? I don’t know. Can I tell you the story of how I found it instead? There’s an Orris shop on Melrose in L.A., and when you walk by, it almost smells like they’re perfuming the entire street. It’s a store that I would never have noticed had I not walked by and smelled it. When I went in, I discovered that it’s an awesome boutique perfumery.

My home’s style is pretty eclectic. It’s like bohemian meets contemporary, so classic California, in a way. We love to entertain and we’re trying to do more of it. This is the hub of all the entertaining we do in our home. It’s just so pretty.

This is my no-excuses stretching tool. Even on my laziest mornings, I can use it with very little effort and work out all the kinks. I stand up a lot for my job, so it’s a great tool for extension and for getting my length and strength back. I started practicing yoga probably 15, 16 years ago when I was in college. My sister — who was actually on Grey’s this season — is also a yoga teacher. She took me to my first class. And this is like my shortcut yoga tool: When I don’t have time for a full practice, I can still get a couple really good stretches in.

My dog-walking uniform. We got her in August so we’ve had her for about four months. Her name is Motown. She’s a rescue and she looks like a miniature chocolate Lab; we think she’s a mix of a Lab and an Italian greyhound. The sneakers are probably the most comfortable sneakers I’ve ever owned. And the sweatsuit — a gift from my husband — is super soft and comfy.

These are a great thing to have around the house. I’ll use one to massage my lower back and feet. Obviously the dog likes to play with them. And I actually play tennis, too. So we have them around at all times.
