Well, we just now happened to take a closer look at that material, and Ho … lee … crap. It’s a Russian book or magazine, strategically posed so that the title is upside-down but readable: “Litvinenko’s Murder — They Wanted to Give Up a Suspect for $7,000.” Litvinenko, of course, is the Russian ex-spy whose death — by polonium-laced sushi — has been widely attributed to Putin’s goons. We have no idea what the business with the $7,000 is (maybe it’s the price of the bag?), and nor do we want to know! The very fact of Litvinenko’s name in the middle of the meticulously composed Annie Leibovitz shot is enough of a jaw-dropper. Alexander Litvinenko Food NewsDaily Intel points out something that never would’ve occurred to us in a million years: Since former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko dined on possibly polonium-tainted sushi at what has officially been the most publicized restaurant meal of 2006, the eatery, Itsu Sushi, has been on a roll. Riding a wave of publicity, the owners plan on opening a branch in New York. “It sounds macabre and opportunistic to say that this is Itsu’s moment, but they just have to make sure they manage it properly,” brand consultant Graham Hales told Bloomberg. “There is a point of notoriety that Itsu has achieved that it can now build upon.” Now for the “fusion” cooking jokes.
