The annual parade of gowns down the Oscars' red carpet last night was a big-time bore; no one looked absolutely dazzling. And no one looked absolutely dreadful, unless you count Ryan Seacrest. Though there was also Colin Farrell … But we digress! We don't understand why more stars don't wear fashionable things to the Oscars. This year's numerous solid-colored silk gowns harkened back to prom, per usual, but thank God for Marion Cotillard, who at least livened things up a little bit. The Guardian called her Jean Paul Gaultier fish gown "creepy," while the Telegraph called it a "winner." Finally, controversy! The postshow fashion analysis, along with our own takeaway,

Paula Zahn and her husband, Richard Cohen, are duking it out in the tabloids again, and this time, at least, they're keeping their kids out of it. Team Paula tells the Daily News that "she and Richard weren't having sex for some time," maybe even a year. But Team Richard hits back in the Post, alleging that the former CNN anchor was having her affair with Contigroup CEO Paul Fribourg for at least a year before the shtupping stopped. Fribourg and Cohen were friends and would frequently golf together or share family outings, say both papers, even after the trysts began. Though Fribourg has started proceedings for a (reportedly amicable) split from his wife, no divorce papers have been filed between Zahn and Cohen themselves. And they've been publicly sparring since April! They're probably just psyched to be in the papers for something other than that godforsaken Pale Male debacle.

There's already been much ado about Charlie Gibson's refusal to play along with Stephen Colbert's goofy "WristStrong" campaign, and the Times article that exposed the mini-controversy. Colbert asked the Gibson and Katie Couric and Brian Williams to wear bracelets on air in order to raise awareness of "wrist violence," and Katie and Brian, the fun anchors, are playing along. In the article Huffington Post media editor Rachel Sklar said their participation shows "good humor" and "humanity," and then Portfolio blogger Jeff Bercovici jumped on her for it — pointing out that the whole reason people like hearing the news from Charlie Gibson is because he isn't fun, he's serious. But our question is why was blogger Rachel Sklar quoted as a TV news expert in the first place? Why not someone with experience in the biz who could lend more insight — or an insider? Because the article was written by young Brian Stelter, a.k.a. the wunderkind behind the blog TVNewser, that's why. Before he was recently hired by the Gray Lady, he was Sklar's co-worker and buddy at Mediabistro. Silly Stetler — you can't just quote your friends. This is the Times, not the Observer!

When Nish went under earlier this week, partner Joe Scalice didn’t have to look far for his next home: He simply walked two blocks over and took up residence as general manager at Solace, a one-week-old “American seasonal” restaurant created by David Regueiro of Aureole, Metrazur, and most recently the Water Club. (Given what Salice just went through at the late Nish, and Regueiro’s years under famously demanding taskmasters like Charlie Palmer and Michael “Buzzy” O’Keefe, Solace would seem to be just what the two men are seeking.) “We wanted to create a space where people would feel comfortable, with food they could understand,” the chef says. We can certainly see standards like salt cod and gnocchi ragout, butter braised lobster, and eggplant, goat cheese, and tomato terrine hitting the spot on a quiet night in the garden (open till 11 p.m.), with our own bottle in tow (Solace is still waiting on its liquor license).

By a happy coincidence, two videos, both demonstrating the breadth of the human experience as encompassed by the mighty but still humble hamburger, have just turned up on the Web. In one, artist David Greg Harth stands in front of a Greenwich Village McDonald’s offering to buy random pedestrians a free meal. Banal performance “happening,” in which a trustafarian art student spends his grant money? Maybe. But a mere eleven minutes in, angry cops, sicced on the hapless Harth by the corporate behemoth he so obliquely critiques, rush the video to its disturbing but somehow inevitable dénouement. Meanwhile, Serious Eats is showing a clip from George Motz’s Hamburger America documentary, featuring a kindly old soul in Meers, Oklahoma, who lovingly raises heritage Texas longhorn cattle only to slaughter and then serve the beasts in his roadside restaurant. One video’s a portrait of a gentle man tending to a disappearing culture; the other, a gritty look at corporate culture’s hard, paradoxical realities. And yet neither would not have been possible without that patty-shaped embodiment of American culture. Another reason to love your hamburgers, America.
