The La Palapa Party Bus Starts Rolling Today

East Village Mexican eatery La Palapa will not let a week's worth of renovations slow down the fiesta. Instead, they've hired a party bus and D.J. Juan Carlos to shuttle dinner patrons back and forth to their West Village location. On the way over they'll be serving antojitos like chile-and-lime-roasted peanuts and chicharrones with salsa valentina. Not good enough? A bartender dressed like Frida Kahlo will be serving complimentary margaritas, Cosmopolitans à la rosa, and Palomas (tequila and Mexican grapefruit soda). Bus trips start at 5 p.m. on Monday and will continue through the week. It all sounds a little uncomfortably like the start of our spring-break trip to Rosarito. Comedian Todd Barry Eschews Tomatoes, Eggs, and Mayo, But Not 33-Cent Cookies

On Late Night With Conan O’Brien recently, Conan called comedian Todd Barry “the quintessential New Yorker.” That doesn't mean he's at Balthazar every morning. “Every time I talk about Chipotle in conversation," he told Conan's audience, "Someone goes, ‘Oh, Chipotle is delicious. Can you believe they were started by McDonald’s?’ ‘Uh, McDonald’s is delicious, so yes, I can believe that. It’s not like Ben and Jerry’s opened up a lingerie shop. It’s the world’s greatest restaurant chain taking a stab at another kind of food and hitting it out of the park.’” Other than that, Barry eats at Café Orlin about five times a week. Since it was closed for renovations this week, he had to practice his tomato, mayo, and orange-juice pulp aversions elsewhere.

Name a Falafel Joint for $3,000

Yesterday, another shawarma-and-falafel joint with a similar menu took the place of Chickpea on Third Avenue. Since the words “shawarma” and “falafel” are, after all, painted down the side of the building, the restaurant isn’t in a hurry to name itself, and, like Chickpea before it, it’s holding a contest that will award $3,000 ($500 more than Chickpea offered) to the person who comes up with something snappy. As you might guess from their URL, www.name-our-glatt-kosher.com, the place is under Orthodox Union supervision; it closes two hours before Shabbat on Friday and opens an hour after it ends on Saturday (lucky for anyone getting tanked on cheap drinks at Continental next door — it’s open until 4 a.m. on Thursday, 5 a.m. on Saturday, and 1 a.m. all other days). Anyone have signage suggestions other than the painfully obvious — a rabbi saying, “Not-So-Awful Falafels”? Name Our Glatt Kosher, 23 Third Ave., nr. St. Marks Pl. East Village Pinkberry Opens Today, Quickly Lays Down the Law

A new Pinkberry is opening in the old Dojo space on St. Marks between Second and Third avenues today, which is great for everyone except Very Berry a few doors down. But may we ask what’s up with the “PHOTOGRAPHY IS PROHIBITED” sticker in the window? Given that Pinkberry is, after all, a frozen-yogurt joint, this is possibly more ridiculous than GoldBar’s no-photos sign. St. Marks Place is all about punk rock, man! People, Please! Hasta La Vista to ‘Buena Vista Social Club’

On Monday night, we stopped into Terroir (Hearth’s already-packed new wine bar), where conspicuously mustachioed Thomas Crowley of Bar Veloce happened to be sampling his neighbor’s wares. We’re sure he loved the food and drink just like we did, but the bartender was concerned that he might not be digging the music. That’s because during the entire time we were there, we had to listen to Buena Vista Social Club.

Ko Reservation System, Day Two: You Missed the Window

After an extremely dicey launch yesterday, the Momofuku Ko reservation system seems to be functioning more or less like a normal Website today. As the site notes, reservations book one week in advance; booking for each new day begins at 10 A.M. So we leisurely logged on at 10:20 a.m. to check out the situation and were greeted with the ugly image at right. In under twenty minutes, and after 24 hours of some serious bugs, Chang's keg for the week is already tapped. If you're serious about scoring a table in the first month, best to get an intern on 9:55 a.m. duty.
