Brooklyn (and Harlem) Vegans Get a Restaurant Week

Non-meat-eaters know how to travel to eat well (the half-day schlep to Flatbush’s Veggie Castle, a converted White Castle, is a right of passage). So, we predict the path through the city’s first-ever Vegetarian Restaurant Week, taking place in Harlem and Brooklyn through October 27, will be well worn. The week’s itinerary is filled with some proselytizing info sessions for those looking to go raw or from veggie to vegan. But we’re focusing on the free tastings and prix fixe meals.

Momofuku Won't Close for Even One Day; Half Off Wine at Artisanal

East Village: David Chang plans on wasting no time turning Momofuku Noodle Bar into Momofuku Ko next month: The place won't close for even much a day but rather will morph overnight into its new identity. [Grub Street] Related: Keeping Up With the Momofukus Flatiron: Cookbook editor Judith Jones will lead a discussion and wine tasting at Bottlerocket Wine & Spirit on October 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. [Grub Street] Fort Greene: On Saturday evenings the gourmet shop L’Epicerie turns into “a $40 per head, BYOB, family-style restaurant offering a casually sophisticated take on the dinner party.” [NYO] Midtown: All the wines by the glass at Artisanal will be half off after 10 p.m., starting next week. Boerum Hill: The owners of Gravy have surrendered the struggling space to their adjacent beer garden Trout and are now serving “fish shack fare.” [Brownstoner via Bottomless Dish/Citysearch] Carroll Gardens: Nino’s Pizzeria on Henry Street has closed, possibly another victim of Lucali’s favoritism. [Bergen Carroll] Fort Greene: iCi is hosting a winemaker dinner on October 25 with guests Emmanuel Guillot-Broux from Macon and Laurent Tibes of Clos des Camuzeilles in Languedoc. [Grub Street] Long Island City: Central restaurant and bar is hosting Greek Aid on Friday to raise money for victims of the country’s recent fires. [Joey in Astoria] Midtown West: Hooters unveiled its 2008 calendar last night where the cover girl had these wise words: “I started off with a small picture, then split the back cover with another girl, finally made it to Ms. February and now I’m on the cover. I’ve made it. Long Island Oyster Boom; North African Bakery Heats Up Astoria

Astoria: Patisserie la Brioche D’Or has just opened on Steinway at 25th Avenue and is baking up some French pastries and delicious North African treats. [Joey in Astoria] East Village: Leaving the old classic Kiev sign above the new garish American Grill one is like a slap in to old schoolers who remember their old haunt. [Lost City] Fort Greene: Mo-Bay Caribbean joint has given up the ghost, and a wine bar is taking its place. [Eat for Victory/VV] Little Italy: San Gennaro’s fast-food frenzy ends today, but there are still a few restaurants in the area where you can eat a normal meal. [NYT] Midtown East: Shinbashi sushi restaurant helped introduce raw-fish consumption to New York in the seventies. Now it can be found in the former Savannah Steak space on 48th Street. [Restaurant Girl] Sagaponack: Townline BBQ impresses as being legitimately Texan, at least by Hamptons standards.
