What Barneys Is Buying

Throughout the week, the buyers from Barneys, Intermix, and other stores will tell us which runway looks they plan on stocking. Today, Julie Gilhart, senior vice-president and fashion director of Barneys New York, files her weekend picks.

Phillip Lim

This was his first runway show, and it's made him a contender. His pieces were sophisticated enough to be on our designer floors, but he understands the need to have high-style fashion for our Co-op area. I loved the purity of all the white pieces with delicate flower appliqués. I personally will be wearing the double-face cotton trapeze dress with the embroidered eyelet collar in antique white. Their base is great, sexy, cool jeans. But they did a terrific job at pinafore dresses, groovy girl suits, and preppy but sexy knits. I loved the pale-pink wide-leg pantsuit shown with a shirt and a tie. (Browse the collection.)

Brian Reyes

His third show and his best. He did the best short party dresses so far. His fabrics are rich and sumptuous but have this look of being light and airy. I am a sucker for a jumpsuit, and his black pleated short (and I do mean short) silk crêpe one with a tiny striped belt was the cutest, sexiest thing I have seen so far. If you have great legs, you gotta get this. (Browse the collection.)

Thakoon

Thakoon is our American fashion poet, and this collection was all about the romance of flowers. Delicate and prettier than anything else we have seen on the runway so far. Colors washed out like a faded flower or brilliant as a first bloom. I am lusting for the black embossed-rose kimono dress that slips ever-so-gently off the shoulder. (Browse the collection.)
