The January issues were so thin, it was almost shocking. But! Fashion and fantasy trudged on within their pages, mostly in the European issues, as usual. We also got our first taste of the spring 2009 collections. Zoo Germany brought us shocking nudes, i-D brought us glorious Gareth Pugh, and GQ brought us two of our favorite hot American men, Penn Badgley (shot by Terry Richardson!) and Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. As for this month's worst pages, Esquire included a gratuitous portrait of Chloë Sevigny, and Lydia Hearst proved why she should have just stayed a socialite. See these images and more in the slideshow.
Twiggiest Spread - British Vogue
Karlie Kloss makes like a tree in a "what to wear now" spread in British Vogue. Not only does she look twiggy, she looks like Twiggy in that Chanel number on the left.
Best Editorial - Korean Vogue
This editorial in Korean Vogue was one of January's most original. They transformed Asian models into the Supers. Here we see Song Kyung A as Claudia Schiffer and Daul Kim as Linda Evangelista.
Worst Editorial - Elle
We find nothing attractive about this spread in Elle. The model is stylist Masha Orlov, but she's not the reason it came out badly. The styling feels forced, the lighting makes her skin look green, and we have a feeling she'd look prettier without all that awkward makeup.
Worst Celebrity Portrait - Chloe Sevigny in Esquire
Why, Chloe? Why?
Hottest Family - German Vogue
Isabeli Fontana posed with her husband and son for German Vogue. They're sickeningly perfect, and thankfully the spread lacks the awkwardness of Brangelina's breast-feeding mess in W.
Most Overdone Set - Glamour
We're sick of the putting-things-in-overgrown-fields-that-don't-belong-there photo-shoot concept. Magazines love to put couches and lamps in an overgrown field with a frizzy-haired model. It's meant to be quirky, but it's become a cliche. Can we kiss this good-bye in 2009?
Best Gossip Girl Portrait - Penn Badgley in GQ
We couldn't tell this was Terry Richardson's work when we first saw it. But the idea of him taking sexually suggestive pictures of Gossip boy Penn Badgley fills us with delight. The tennis balls, the pie, the confetti --he might not be shirtless, but kudos for not looking as stiff as he usually does.
Hottest Olympic Athlete - Ryan Lochte in GQ
Proof that Ryan Lochte is so much sexier than Michael Phelps. Our only criticism is that he would definitely wear a Speedo on the beach.
Best Girl Fight - Dazed & Confused
Hedi Slimane scouted London's streets for teens to shoot for Dazed & Confused. We feel the angst here. But also, the love.
Worst Shoes - Lucky
We are all for warm footwear that prevents one from slipping in the snow, but we don't like a single shoe on this page. We like sleek, fur-lined boots. Not boots that make it look like you have electrocuted kittens clinging to your ankles.
Worst Hair - Marie Claire
Bangs were never meant to extend to the ears. Nor look like they'd make a sound if you tapped a knuckle on them.
Most Versatile Model - Abbey Lee
Twenty-one-year-old model Abbey Lee looked stunning, and perhaps a little too proper, in a W editorial this month. Then we caught her topless in Alexander Wang shorts and a nose ring in i-D. Go extreme or go to American Vogue, we guess.
Least Versatile Model - Lydia Hearst in Zoo Germany
The pose-iness of this spread proves Lydia Hearst is only a model because she was a socialite first. Next!
Best Dress - Chinese Vogue
Dior Haute Couture. Timeless.
Best Styling - Zoo Germany
On the left is the Alice Dellal of male models in a BOSS Black jacket, Calvin Klein manties, and Dior Shoes. On the right is one of our favorite pieces of the spring 2009 season -- a fringe dress by Jil Sander. Both these images make us a tad uncomfortable, but we love that they make us feel something.
Best Nude Portrait - Zoo Germany
World, meet Laura. Laura, meet world. Holy Lolita is right.
Best Diva Clothes - i-D
On the left we have Gareth Pugh, on the right we have Balmain -- two of our favorite lines. It's only a matter of time before Beyonce gets her hands on that Pugh. Here's hoping Britney discovers Balmain in 2009.
Best Faces - i-D
We can't believe we're saying this, but it looks like eye patches are in. Remember, Rihanna also wore one to the 2008 American Music Awards. The model on the right in the Swarovski face mask makes us want to be a disco ball for Halloween. Maybe that's just us? In any case, screw eye shadow.
