Jason Wu Is Planning a ‘Significant Fur Collection’

The day after Michelle Obama stepped out in a Jason Wu dress at the Inaugural Ball, the designer's website received a record 4 million hits. Wu has said repeatedly in interviews that throughout the Inaugural Ball hooplah, he's staying focused on his fall 2009 collection, which he'll show the first day of Fashion Week on February 13. But we're pretty sure he didn't share this tidbit with Access Hollywood:

"I'm doing a significant fur collection, and the message will be all about luxury," he revealed to The Daily last week. "Fashion is also sort of escapism, and women need beautiful dresses to lose themselves in."

Sounds polarizing. If any young designer can sell an exorbitant collection in These Times, it's newly super-famous Wu. But also, retailers have said repeatedly that they're looking for unique pieces to lure shoppers back into stores. With even Karl Lagerfeld championing "the new modesty" in fashion, Wu's collection might excite them. But how much of it will Michelle be able to wear? We have a hunch she won't wear fur — call it a psychic connection. If Wu becomes PETA's new Donna Karan, will Michelle still support him? The last thing she (or anyone) needs is PETA on her ass.
