New York's collections were full of one surprise after another. Instead of offering sedate clothes to match the somber economic mood, designers turned out bright colors — neon is back, mustard became the new beige, and chartreuse was everywhere. The "Me" decade was in full force, with big shoulders popping up on nearly every runway. And biker chic reigned supreme. Of course, there was more to fall 2009 than just these trends. Click to see our fifteen top shows of Fashion Week.
Skintight, textured, and sheer, Alexander Wang's collection was hard-hitting -- a win for the CFDA-fund winner.
Francisco Costa played with textures and color (well, some color) in his mostly black collection.
Derek Lam was lauded by critics for his sophisticated show. Versatile, chic, and very wearable, this was a home run for the designer.
Between the shearling gauntlets (not fur, PETA!) and the Robert Lee Morris necklaces, Donna Karan's collection was accessorized to the hilt. The clothing was some of her best yet.
Jason Wu was the man to watch last week, and he didn't disappoint. He showed classic American clothes in bright colors and patterns -- perfect for a First Lady.
Marc Jacobs took us on a trip back to the eighties. Always pushing the envelope, his colors were bolder and brighter and his shoulders bigger and pointier. Denizens in black, get ready for neon.
Nobody does classic American sportswear like Michael Kors. His outerwear is pretty perfect. But even he can rock a new trend. And so we give you the neon fur coat.
Narciso is the king of minimal -- clean lines, a modern aesthetic, and dresses that are sexy and beautiful.
Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta showed the ladylike looks we've come to love him for. But he also gave us the bold colors and one-shouldered looks we've been seeing on the runways. So on trend!
Phi's dresses were zipped and buckled and black, black, black. We loved the new twist on the leather bomber jacket.
3.1 Phillip Lim
Phillip Lim's collection was fit for French dandies. Tailcoats, Mongolian-lamb fur coats, and perfect layers. We loved.
Preen gave us a collection full of sheer looks and coats with dazzling cutouts. Who needs function when you have form?
We loved Proenza's off-the-shoulder tops, metallics, and velvet dresses. This was one of the strongest collections they've had yet.
Ralph's collection was country living at its best. We love the Mongolian fur jacket, and the pairing of an evening dress with a comfy sweater. A suit and a pageboy equal Ralph's homage to the eighties.
What wasn't there to love about Rodarte's show? From the thigh-high boots to the leather jackets, the show was hot, fun, and downright amazing.
