Pants might be over as we know it. Thigh-high boots emerged as the hot shoe for fall, landing so far up the leg they doubled as leg warmers. Is this designers' collective attempt to save the world from the pantless ladies everywhere (Lady Gaga and Lindsay Lohan)? Designers even tacked on a few bells and whistles to their boots: Hussein Chalayan added garter belts, Prada made rubber waders stylish, Antonio Berardi lined his in fur, and Stella McCartney's faux-leather leggings were actually boots that pulled up to the crotch. Even Vogue editor Lauren Santo Domingo was so enthralled by the "It" item that she created her own after designers rejected her plea for an early off-the-runway pair, and cameras caught her frolicking around Paris in her DIY boot legs. But are we ready to embrace the implications of this phenomenon? Pants as we know them are losing popularity. And with the surge of thigh-highs, rescuing them is even further from our reach. So grab your ThighMaster and dust it off now ... things are about to get leggy. To see all of the over-the-knee boots, click ahead for our slideshow.
Antonio Berardi lined a pair of his suede thigh-highs with fuzzy fur. Kind of like Uggs, only taller and, well, better.
Tall boots make minis look not so mini, like here at Alexandre Herchcovitch.
Why spend money on boots and leggings? Roberto Cavalli combined them. If you want to simplify your life, there you go.
Hussein Chalayan added garter belts. And while the boots looked loose around the leg, the belts tugged tightly on thighs.
Costume National went matchy-matchy.
Gareth Pugh didn't forget the platform.
Okay, the no-pants thing? This is no joke. Giles Deacon combined boy-short briefs with white thigh-highs. These also came in gray, black, purple, yellow, and brown. These are important choices.
Frida Giannini completed the disco-party outfits with boot leggings at Gucci. And if you're doing disco, Spandex is a necessity. Why not put some on your boots?
We're pretty sure nothing is under that Guy Laroche burgundy coat other than those boots, while you can't even see the top of the shoes when paired with the off-white dress.
Isabel Marant pairs thigh-highs with a mini and also styles them over leggings. That's right -- double the leg warmth.
Jean Paul Gaultier
Thigh-high boots go with bodysuits. In case you needed validation, Jean Paul Gaultier delivered. He also made them with lots of laces.
The trend veered toward sporty at Lacoste, with thigh-high legging boots in black and white. The black pair featured this great yellow sole. Details, people.
Almost every model walked in a pair of brown suede thigh-highs at Leonard.
Marc Jacobs's eighties-inspired collection was bound to feature the new trend. And with a purple suede pair, it did.
Ohne Titel cinched these leather boots above the knee. Something different.
Peter Jensen added in some prairie-girl flavor with flowers and patterns on thigh-high white boots.
Miuccia Prada's thigh-high Wellies ... not just for fly-fishing in the swamp.
Want flare? Rick Owens flared these over-the-knee boots at the ankle, and then tapered the top so it fit tight around the thighs.
When Rodarte walked in New York, we immediately fell in love with these bondage thigh-high boots. If you said you didn't like them, we're not sure we'd believe you.
It took some investigation to conclude that these were thigh-highs, but alas they were -- only tucked up so high on the leg, they neared the crotch at Stella McCartney. The designer also added another element: The faux-leather boot leggings featured patterns and textures.
Viktor & Rolf
Viktor & Rolf didn't forgo pants totally. Yes, it's possible!
Vivienne Westwood Red Label
Vivienne Westwood placed emphasis on the kneecaps. Perhaps these have built-in knee pads? Oh dear.
VPL by Victoria Bartlett
Boot leggings don't have to be latex and leather. At VPL, the thigh-highs were tight, but in neutral colors like soft gray and beige.
