Our roving design editor Wendy Goodman investigated Gaetano Pesce's studio, Anthropologie's store installation, and the Architectural Digest home show. She talked with Robin Joy at her charming Charles Street store, got a lesson in stonework from Ashley Hicks, and found delicate artwork carved from paper. Check out her treasures and discoveries.
I tracked down Italian designer Gaetano Pesce in his studio, which was a feat since he travels so much. He's like the mad scientist of the design world, creating fantastical pieces of furniture with unconventional materials: silicone, polyurethane, steel, and resin. He's in MoMA's permanent collection, and is sold at Moss. This is his desk. When the leg broke, he fixed it at this angle; he liked the way it looks.
Here's Gaetano in his studio with two of his fabulous flower platters (behind them is his famous blue chair). "I wasn't sure what the silicone would do," he told me. "The materials kind of did their own thing."
Here is a series of kids' chairs, which look like something from Where the Wild Things Are. Behind them is a wall of his designs over the years.
All these objects live together very happily; a beautiful Greek head amid the wildflowers. Gaetano is being honored by FIT with the Lawrence J. Israel prize and is giving a free lecture on April 14 at 5:45 p.m. in the D building at 27th Street and Seventh Avenue. Gaetanopesce.com.
Danny Murphy is a young artist who does objects in paper and paint. They're fragile and unique. Danielseanmurphy.com.
The Studium Showroom
I learned a thing or two about stonework at David Meitus, whose showroom, Studium (150 East 58th Street) has been presenting the designs of David Hicks by Ashley Hicks (Ashley is the son of the late, legendary interior designer). This is a new technique for stone flooring, called mesh-backed laser-water-jet-cut stone. It's much less expensive than the usual inlay technique, where each piece is individually cut and sized. Now your bathroom can look very Roman.
Robin Joy on Charles Street
I went to Robin Joy's charming store at 128 Charles Street (down below street level) after seeing her neat installation at Leffot, the shoe store on Christopher Street that has an art and installation gallery in the back. Joy's shop is exactly that: joyful, filled with ceramics, coloring books, accessories, and chocolates. The day I was there, a young mother was having tea with her little girl. Heaven!

Those pink hands are Robin Joy's peel-on, peel-off wallpaper. It's very easy and a wonderful way to make an unattractive pipe or duct charming. Robinjoy.com.
Anthropologie's team of excellent home buyers is headed by Keith Johnson, buyer-at-large. He sleuths out all these amazing artisans all over the world. Right now the Rockefeller Center store is featuring designs from South Africa, like this curvy, whimsical pitcher/vase by Mick Haigh.
The designers of LIVE recycle and reuse everything. This bureau is made from wire and old drawers.
These animals are made from old rubber flip-flops that washed up on the beach in Kenya, and then were cleaned and shaped by the local community. They're my favorite!
I could have just fallen into this huge puffy chair made from scraps of cloth. This is how creative you can be with leftovers!
Architectural Digest Home Show
I ran through the Architectural Digest home show and saw Robin Wilson's new ecofriendly line for Holiday Kitchens. The backsplash she was showing is pressed seaweed in a laminate. Very refreshing.
Architectural Digest Home Show
Who doesn't love a George Nakashima chair? I could have stayed here for hours.
Architectural Digest Home Show
These tiny chairs are delightful. They're fantastic projects done by the students at New York School of Interior Design.
