May marks the transition from spring to summer. That means skimpier clothes! This month's highlights include seriously sexy model Anne V, who sports football shoulders and little else in Dazed & Confused. Wearing more clothes is Paul Rudd, who plays with pink poodles in GQ. 10 offers an inspired, sexy look at Westernwear, while Elle attempts to do the same thing, but winds up with a sad look at denim. Whitney Port fails to impress as a model in In Style. But Natalia Vodianova is divine dressed up as Twiggy in Vogue. And our favorite new trend? Face (and beard!) stickers. See those images and more in the slideshow.
Best Editorial - i-D
On the left you see Prada, on the right you see Gucci. The concept is terrific. Also, trippy.
Best Vintage Photograph - British Vogue
British Vogue did a fantastic story this month where they asked designers, stylists, and photographers to choose the one image that changed their lives and forever altered their perspectives. Philip Lim chose this 1991 Peter Lindbergh shot of Helena Christensen, Stephanie Seymour, Karen Mulder, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, and Cindy Crawford. This moment will never get old.
Best Celebrity Portrait - Paul Rudd in GQ
GQ did something completely unpredictable with Paul Rudd. Puppies! PINK puppies! (And a really cute one on his face.)
Most Predictable Celebrity Portrait - Evan Rachel Wood in GQ
On the other hand, GQ took the predictable route with Evan Rachel Wood. They call her the "kinky neighbor down the street," and note her "aggressive sexuality." Yeah, yeah -- we got that when she started dating Marilyn Manson two years ago.
Best Maternity Dress - British Vogue
Elena Perminova is married to the owner of the Evening Standard. She is pregnant. This Mark Fast fabric scrap of a dress is what she wears.
Best New Face Trend - Stickers!
She's got little unicorn stickers on her face (from Mixte magazine). He's got a similarly festive multicolored arrangement in his beard, (from Dazed & Confused). These are what we call fresh faces.
Most Overdone Spring Trend - Elaborate Head Ornamentation
These shots are from i-D (top left), French Vogue (top right), and British Vogue (bottom row). Junya Watanabe piled foliage on his models' heads for his spring show so stylists have been keen on coming up with ridiculous head ornamentation of their own all spring. Enough. It only distracts from the six-figure items of clothing they're showing us. And we don't want to be distracted!
Best Use of a Giant Handbag - i-D
It's a purse but it looks like oversize bondage gear.
Dorkiest Menswear Editorial - Esquire
"Watch out, girlfriend! I'll knock you in the pool with my inner tube and then fight you with my grilling mits! And then go order things online from the Land's End catalog and unwind with a game of computer solitaire!"
Most Awkward Spread - Teen Vogue
This spread is so confused. The 14-year-old couple took a jaunt to Peru. She walked a llama. Then they had a picnic. With no food. This is why the world needs parents.
Best Model - Anne V. in Dazed & Confused
Anne V has two very awkward things going on here: the tumor of a shoulder pad she wears and the bow she must hold above her head. Yet she looks not-at-all awkward. Just sexy.
Worst Model - Whitney Port in In Style
Whitney Port looks lovely when she smiles on the red carpet. These images might have felt less forced if she had smiled naturally rather than try awkwardly to vamp.
Worst Home-Decor Trend - Slovenliness
On the top is Paper editorial director Mickey Boardman's apartment. On the bottom is Dash Snow's studio in Muse. All the clean rooms have just been shot to death, you see.
Most Painful Photo - W
That dress is Valentino.
Best Way to Die - Muse
In Milk (top) and John Galliano (bottom). Also, make sure you're out when you go so everyone can see how fabulous you look.
Best Pantsless Editorial - British Vogue
Natalia Vodianova does couture. Pants take the day off.
Most Versatile Model - Natalia Vodianova in Vogue
And she wins again! Natalia posed as fashion's most legendary models. Often these kinds of shoots can feel gimmicky, but Natalia nailed it. On the left she does Jean Patchett, and on the right, Twiggy.
Best Accessories Spread - Muse
These charming illustrations made this spread the most interesting and unique accessory story of the month, by far.
Best Gothic Editorial - W
That Jil Sander fringed dress on the left must get tangled. Finally an editorial that expresses that frustration!
Worst Case of Matthew Williamson Envy - House of Dereon in W
The patterns, the chiffon blowing in the breeze by the ocean. Been there, done that, Beyonce.
Best Western - 10
Westernwear should be sexy and edgy, and about as unlike what Jessica Simpson wore in the Dukes of Hazard as possible.
Worst Western - Elle
It should not make denim look like the world's most unflattering fabric, or its wearer look like a long-lost member of Destiny's Child.
Best Makeup - Mixte
NASCAR eyes! And crusty gold eyelashes!
Worst Waste of a Puppy - Glamour
Miley Cyrus probably hasn't quite reached the appropriate age or maturity level to appear on the cover of adult lady magazines, but Glamour jumped the gun anyway. This is why they shouldn't have.
Best Outfit Repeat - Dazed & Confused
They're both wearing the same men's shirt and shoes by Givenchy. It's like shopping your significant other's closet!
