Model Kendra Spears Sparks Lawsuit Between Ford and Next Agencies

Spears in Italian Vogue, February 2009.

Two modeling agencies are fighting over rising star Kendra Spears. Spears recently left Ford Models to sign with Next Management, and Ford is pretty upset. They filed a suit in Manhattan Supreme Court against the model for breach of contract. Some background: After Spears became a finalist in Ford's Supermodel of the World competition last year, the agency brought the Seattle native onboard with a three-year contract and transformed her from college student into hot international model. Soon she was booking shows and editorials: She walked the fall 2009 runways for Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, and Prada, starred in editorials for Italian Vogue, Italian Marie Claire, and Another Magazine, and landed a campaign for Gap. So, with two years left on her contract, Spears has jumped ship to Next, following three other models. Of course, the implications of this will affect other models and their contracts, but in the end, it seems like basic contract law to us: You sign one, you follow it. But what do we know? We didn't go to law school.
