Target Executives Can’t Handle Anna Sui’s Gossip Girl Inspiration

A look book for Anna Sui’s Target collection has leaked, with outfits grouped by the Gossip Girl character that inspired the designs. Jenny, Serena, Blair, and Vanessa were all muses. However, Target may rescind the collection’s Gossip Girl inspiration, because the show is too racy. The Daily News reports:

“One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show, given the [debauchery] its characters get into,” says an on-the-set source. For example, Blake Lively’s character, Serena, killed a man, and most of the characters frequently get wasted, do drugs and have promiscuous sex.

Okay, we wouldn’t say Serena killed a man, per se — that scenario totally depends on how you look at it. But still, there was the time Georgina slipped Serena a mickey, and the time Dan took what could have been Ecstasy, and the time Jenny danced around in her underwear.

Target executives are reportedly so nervous about the line’s association with the fictional debauchery, they pulled out of a chance to get the line in the actual show — a golden marketing opportunity. A party scene starring Blair and Chuck was set to shoot at Sui’s Soho store last Tuesday, and models playing extras were going to wear Sui’s Target designs, sources say. The designer herself was even supposed to make a cameo, but Target pulled out at the last minute. It can’t have been that big a deal — they probably could have easily shot at the Agent Provocateur around the corner instead.

In any case, the Gossip Girl inspiration has been widely discussed in the media, and if designers just start changing inspirations with the wind, what’s next? Someone will get a bad review and then say, “The show was just a mirage — what is wrong with you, general public?” Now may be a good time for Georgina to slip those Target execs a Tylenol and a strong cocktail and encourage them to lighten up.
