Last night’s Emmy ceremony continued the show’s tradition of being tragically less boozy than the Golden Globes while not being nearly as revered as the Oscars. But just because no one fell off the stage or accidentally lit Ryan Seacrest on fire doesn’t mean that those generous souls who braved the red carpet solely for our entertainment — and their own good press — don’t deserve a little constructive feedback. Keep reading for the Emmys’ biggest hits and misses.
CHEERIEST: Kristin Chenoweth
This frock is as relentlessly bright as Kristin herself seems to be. But we can't help sort of liking it, perhaps because it suits her personality so well. Yes, she looks a bit like she popped a disco ball into a blender and glued the pieces onto some cloth, but we applaud her for achieving the rare feat of picking something cocktail-length that's still glitzy enough to befit the occasion.
MOST MULLETY: Jennifer Morrison
This dress's big problem is also its only asset: It's all business in the front — a boring bridesmaid-y shift with an asymmetrical hem and boob darts so obvious they practically give you a head injury — with a hint of a party in the back. Dr. House would probably diagnose it as bipolar, but we think maybe it just got bored and tried to fix itself.
WORST DISSERVICE TO A TOTAL BABE: Kyra Sedgwick
On TV, the color didn't wash Kyra out as much, but unfortunately for her, the pictures are what last forever. And the rest of this dress is just a twee disaster. She is way too hot at her age (or any age) to look like she's wearing wallpaper from a Barbie-themed bedroom.
WONKIEST WHITE: Leighton Meester
Not only does this look too big, but it eats poor Leighton alive — although we applaud her for wearing something that seems to have a built-in neck pillow, the better for napping when the telecast starts to drag.
MOST WEIRDLY OLD: Elisabeth Moss
Oh, honey, you are way cuter than this wrinkled old thing. It's musty, it ages you, and the neck piece — which appears to be part of the dress, making this even less explicable — totally fights with the one-shoulder cut. Someone at Mad Men really should've done her a solid and handed her the keys to Betty Draper's closet.
BEST SURPRISE: Sandra Oh
Sandra is traditionally hit-or-miss at these events. Sometimes she’s amazing, and other times it seems like she decided to get dressed in the middle of a tornado. So it’s a relief to see her looking so relaxed in this super-flattering frock that manages to be both simple and glamorous. The pink slingbacks are a fun, girly touch.
MOST INTRIGUING: Jennifer Carpenter
Unusual — but in a good way, rather than a desperate, scary, weird one. The intricate beading on this gown not only makes it more interesting than the rest of those tired fishtail-hemmed numbers, but we also think it might have hypnotized us.
MOST CONFUSED: Lindsay Price
This isn’t terrible in theory. But in practice it looks like two dresses hastily glued together over the course of a Project Runway challenge gone terribly awry. As Tim Gunn would say, we’re concerned. In the end, poor Lindsay did not — all together now! — make it work.
MOST OBVIOUS: Blake Lively
If it’s an awards show, Blake Lively must be showing every inch of both her legs and her boobs. PICK ONE, SERENA. And put the other away.
BEST OF THE BLUES: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Let’s be honest. Julia almost always looks great. Does that get a little boring? Obviously. But there’s something to be said for knowing your strengths and playing to them, and this was well played indeed. In fairness, we wish JLD had resisted the urge to match her shoes to her dress, but no one’s perfect. Or so they keep telling us.
