Christian Dior walked this morning in Paris. Following his fall 2009 Dior Couture show, in which models strutted the runway in just slips and bras, John Galliano remains, like his peers, in a lingerie state of mind. But before we get into the clothes, this is how he opened:
The show was staged against a ‘film noir’ backdrop of a derelict warehouse, suffused with shadowy light and dry ice. There was the sound of heavy breathing, a telephone ringing, a hoarse cry, a gun-shot and then screams. Murder on the dance floor? No, drama on the Dior catwalk. The models appeared, first, as enlarged shadows on a backlit screen.
And out came Karlie Kloss, wearing glitter socks with high platform sandals. This footwear was a theme of the collection, as were trench coats. But the see-through garments were the sartorial highlight, of course. And do know that if you buy this Dior collection, you might not have much choice about how sheer you want to go. Galliano said backstage after the show that all the underwear was built into the dresses.
The Telegraph's Hilary Alexander liked what she saw, especially "when black lace came over jewel-bright purple or fuchsia satin." Rihanna, who wore a see-through dress to Gareth Pugh on Wednesday and a see-through top to Balmain on Thursday, probably enjoyed it, too. Fellow front-row guest Bruce Willis, who attended with his new bride Emma Heming, approved as well. “I’d like to see Emma in some of those dresses,” he offered after the show. Hopefully he means in the house. But does no one fear what this trend might produce outside, on the streets, in public? Dior is beautiful, but we're scared people will take this underwear thing too literally and, come spring, reduce society to a giant slut parade.
