Sudanese Women Sentenced to Lashings for Wearing Pants

Two Sudanese women, ages 25 and 27, were sentenced yesterday to twenty lashings and fined $110 for wearing pants, an act of indecency. The punishment has been postponed since the women filed an appeal. However, indecency cases like these are not uncommon in Sudan, where activists argue individual police officers have too much freedom to determine what constitutes an offense. [LAT]
