Just in time for the holidays, our tireless editor Wendy Goodman finds inspiration while browsing at Prada, the Rug Company, and the new Gagosian Gallery store, and discovers how artists nest during the Design Trust for Public Space's evening benefit.
At the Prada Soho Store
I went to the launch of the new Prada book at the Soho store (575 Broadway, at Prince Street). I love the wall murals that change over time; they show how you can think out of the box with wall space. Here, what I love is how the walls are sectioned off, and famous paintings are referenced in the sections, to form the mural.
A Mountain of Prada
Here's a display of the new book, piled up in the center of the store. It gives you the entire history of Prada, from the products to the amazing ad campaigns over the years, as well as the Fondazione Prada's initiatives with architects and artists.
And So Early in the Morning!
It was barely 9 a.m., but Rachel Judlowe from Ruder Finn turned up looking so fresh and stylish.
Harold Koda and Mark Holgate
Here's the divine Harold Koda, curator in charge of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with Vogue writer Mark Holgate.
Harold pointed out the beauty of the usually lowly coat hanger; here, it is a sculpted piece of wood, of course.
Sometimes, It's Hard to Walk Away
You can't go to a Prada store and not fall in love with a bag. I must admit that my dormant fashion lust was reignited with this visit.
Sort of a Cozy Teepee
Now we're at the Design Trust for Public Space's annual benefit, featuring one-of-a-kind commissioned objects, which was co-chaired by Cindy Allen and Kitty Hawks. The theme this year was "interpreting the nest." This is by Slade Architecture, a New York firm.
The Untapped Power of the Brain
Here's David Rockwell's interpretation; you donned a headband that fed energy into the hanging light sculpture, and your brainwaves (I guess) lit it up.
The Sky Wraps Around the Nest
This one is by Ken Smith Landscape Architect. He does especially brilliant urban landscape-design installations, notably the roof of MoMA.
The Tree That Contains the Nest?
This is a photograph by Larry Lederman. He has been working on a series of trees over the seasons; he has a show up now at the New York Botanical Gardens, in the Bronx.
Not So Much a Nest As a Series of Wings
This is by Sarah Nguyen of Ogilvy New York; it looks like a series of birds' wings.
A Nest of Nests
Here's a larger view of the Design Trust event; the large crystal piece hanging in the front is by Cao/Perrot Studio, and the one behind is by Hariri & Hariri Architecture.
Jeff Koons Puppy Vases!
Now we've gone to the Gagosian Gallery store, which opened a couple of months ago at 980 Madison Avenue. It is a feast of art for sale. Here's a row of Jeff Koons's puppy vases. You can get a Giacometti book for $100, a roll of Damien Hirst flower wallpaper for $300, or you can buy a fascinating jigsaw puzzle for $75.
You Can Sit on Richard Prince
Or you can become an instant collector by buying a Richard Prince nurse-cap chair for $100,000. So there's a range, to put it mildly.
Giacometti Book at Gagosian Gallery
Here's the Giacometti book. He is one of my absolute heroes.
A Miniature Design Library
You are welcome to come in and spend time perusing the books for sale.
Damien Hirst Down the Stairwell
Damien Hirst's floral wallpaper lines the stairwell down to the gallery below the store, where there is more art for sale.
Hirst Hearts and Butterflies
I love this Hirst heart with butterflies. I collect books, but this makes me want to collect art.
Skulls and Wallpaper
Here's more fantastic Hirst wallpaper. It's not inexpensive, but if you can go for it, why not?
Who Wouldn't Want to Browse Here?
Here's one last look at the downstairs of the Gagosian store.
Chefs on the Wall
I went to New York Magazine's Taste of New York event. David Rockwell (he's everywhere) did the most wonderful installation, projecting the faces of the participating chefs onto a panel that was suspended over the bar area.
A Little Dramatic Uplighting Works Wonders
As you entered, you saw the cutting boards, with the names of all the chefs on them. The uplighting gave it a dramatic touch.
The Man Who Invented Stripes
Hello, Sir Paul Smith, in front of one of his new rugs at the Rug Company in Soho at 88 Wooster Street. He is an inspiration — talented, and so nice.
These Could Make You Happy All Day
Here are some Paul Smith wall hangings.
Why Leave the Couch?
And here is a selection of some of his fantastic new pillows; it's all at the Rug Company.
