This week, Design Editor Wendy Goodman takes a tour through Brooklyn, spends time with designer Jonny Detiger as well as the Katch sisters, and visits the Kate Werble Gallery to view Christopher Chiappa's latest show. See all this and more.
Jonny Detiger’s Designs
This is the loft living room of the artist-designer Jonny Detiger. His coffee table here is the packing crate from a delivery. He just added the little feet. It fits in brilliantly with his Ligne Roset furniture.
The Living Room
This is another view of the living room, at the far end is Jonny's painting and his "Kaleidoscope" table.
This is a piece of furniture Jonny designed called "White Magic," which is lacquered wood with a built-in seat and stereo.
The Kaleidoscope Table
Here is close-up of his new "Kaleidoscope" table, which has interchangeable colored panels. When the light hits, it projects kaleidoscope rays on surrounding walls. It's made of Plexiglas. You will be able to buy this soon at the Future Perfect. Also visit Jonny's website at JonnyDetiger.com.
The Katch Sisters
I went to visit the Katch sisters in Williamsburg. Pamela Katch works and lives in this space where many of their furniture designs are featured. Here, you can see the high-gloss laminate Parsons-style dining/desk table.
This is the Woolie Woolie side table, made from recycled felt and lacquered panels.
Separating Personal and Private
The industrial bookshelves separate the private living area from the office space.
Variety Is the Spice of Life
This is a sample of how many colors they can work with in the natural wood used in their furniture design.
Catch Them at Bklyn Designs
Here are the Katch sisters! Pamela is on the left, and Steph is on the right. They will be showing at Bklyn Designs, May 8 to 10 — don't miss it. And be sure to check out their website. KatchDesignCompany.com
Don’t Freak Out
This is the artist Christopher Chiappa, who has a one-man show at the Kate Werble Gallery, at 83 Vandam Street, through April 10. Christopher is also showing his work in the window of Moss, 150 Greene Street, at Houston. This portrait is called "I Always Knew It Would Come To This," which the press release says "represents the madness of the everyday." For sure.
Christopher's stools in the window at Moss are eyeball stools. They are a portrait of his own eyeball. He's out there.
The Riviera in Waiting
We are driving over the Gowanus Canal with Marc Appelbaum, whom I spent a day with visiting different projects he had either finished or was in the process of finishing. I'm obsessed with the Gowanus Canal because I know that one day it will be our own Riviera, in spite of all the heinous pollutants gunking up the water.
Marc Appelbaum Radius Construction
Everyone is always bemoaning contractors, but when you find a great one, you have to share it. Marc Appelbaum and his company Radius Construction do beautiful work, and the clients we visited were so happy. That doesn't happen all that often.
A New Kitchen
We went to a couple of different projects in Brooklyn, and this is a new kitchen addition off of the back of a brownstone into the garden.
The view from the original house into the new kitchen room.
A Bathroom We’d Love to Have
This is a new bathroom for one of the kids. It's so cute.
Renovation and Preservation
This is the entrance of another project in Brooklyn, which preserves the character of the brownstone.
A New Modern Look
The master suite at the top of the house has been totally redone.
A Ray of Light
I love the skylight that they put in this completely renovated bathroom.
Adding Something Old
The master bath again has been totally redone with an antique mirror.
A Fun Kid’s Room
I just love this kid's room, with Spiderman coming right at you.
Waterworks’s New Store
Waterworks's new flagship store on 215 East 58th Street is a paradise for finding any fixture and any style of bathroom you could dream of.
Taking a Tour
I walked through with Barbara Sallick, who is the brilliant co-founder of the company.
So Many Styles to Choose From
The store shows you different combinations of styles and also has places to sit and plan in the midst of it all.
Try One on For Size
This gives you a sense of the different styles of bathtubs, and what I love is that Barbara told me she encourages people to lay in the bathtubs to see if they fit.
Everything is lined up so it's one-stop shopping.
A Shower Can Be Fancy
This is a pretty luxurious shower.
An Update of a Classic
This is the classic claw-foot tub, but updated.
No Ordinary Tub
This might look boring to you, but this is the tub in which most people settle down to find the right size.
