Ushering in the Uniqlo Era

With Uniqlo's new Fifth Avenue store officially in the works, this week's magazine delves into the rapid rise of the Japanese basics brand. It's a success model built on a mountain of skinny jeans and rainbow-colored cashmere: Though Uniqlo flagships failed in suburban malls in the early aughts, it found a devoted following in urban environments like New York and Los Angeles. The Soho outpost is regularly the highest-grossing Uniqlo store worldwide, serving about 24,000 customers every Saturday.
