A couple of months ago, Carol Smith abandoned her post of senior vice-president and chief brand officer of Elle Group after her eight-year tenure to oversee publishing at Condé Nast's Bon Appétit and Gourmet. Why food over fashion? She had said when her move was announced, "I started to think, you know, what’s the difference between food and fashion? Not much." Oh, is that right? The Internet thinks it's on to her: Daily Front Row hears that she had a non-compete clause in her Elle contract preventing her from joining another fashion group. Smith managed to nudge Elle ahead of Vogue in the ad-page race, and with Tom Florio gone, will she eventually take over his Vogue titles?
