Rodarte’s hand-stitched frocks and cobwebby crocheted knits may not scream “high-tech,” but the sisters Mulleavy have partnered with The Los Angeles County Museum of Art on a decidedly futuristic project.
The museum commissioned the designers to be the latest participants in “Cell Phone Stories,” a smart phone-ready series of narratives that asks creative types to reinterpret works in LACMA’s permanent collection. Kate and Laura Mulleavy drafted five fashion sketches, the first of which is a floaty tile-patterned bondage frock inspired by an ancient turquoise-encrusted Mexican skull housed on the museum’s fourth floor. The rest of Rodarte’s art-inspired creations will be available for ogling on Thursday; just text “LACMA” to 67553 to have the drawings sent to your phone. And in the meantime, more info on the project can be found here.
