There are only two days remaining in London Fashion Week, but three very noteworthy creatives showing their collections today: Louise Goldin, Simone Rocha, and Felicity Brown. Their inspirations range from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec to Chinese funerary customs, and they've collectively worked with such design stalwarts as Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, and Lanvin. Click ahead to see samples of their work, and to learn why we think their names are worth the mental bookmark.
Who she is: A designer with an impressive resume and a haute couture sensibility, Felicity Brown studied at the Royal College of Art before working for Lanvin, Alberta Ferreti, and Mulberry. Her 14-piece debut collection took its cues from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and featured artful silk chiffon dresses hand-dyed to mimic the post-Impressionist's work, complete with extensive boning and a multitude of hooks. Barneys was charmed by the line, as were British and Italian Vogue; the young designer scored placement in all three.
Why we like her: Brown doesn't fear statement dressing, and designs with the belief that each piece has a history. "I'm always imagining that I've found an old wardrobe in a theater and opened it up," she explains. For spring 2011, Brown's theatrical creations take their inspiration from butterflies, the 1950s, and vintage kimonos.
Show info: 9/21 at 1:45 p.m. at The Old Truman Brewery.
Who she is: Chances are you’ve already seen Louise Goldin’s show-stopping work. The English designer has collaborated with Topshop, sold her collection in Selfridges, and has been a standout at London Fashion Week for several seasons. Goldin earned her master's from Central Saint Martin and took a gig as head designer at Tereza Santos, where she became fascinated with industrializing new fabrics. She has collaborated with Donatella Versace on knitwear, and has a film in the works with Nick Knight.
Why we like her: “The woman who dresses in Louise Goldin is stylish, effortless, understated, [and] wears the clothes really well,” says Goldin, whose pieces have ranged from flirty pastels to creature-of-the-night body armor. Her spring 2011 line will be a “strong, sporty, luxurious sports collection” inspired by Thailand, so look out for prints reworked from Thai art and light cotton silks.
Show info: 9/21 at 5 p.m. at WC2.
Who she is: Twenty-four-year-old Simone is the daughter of avant garde Irish designer John Rocha, but don't write her off as an entitled little heiress #8212; Simone earned a master's at Central Saint Martin's and paid her dues interning at Marc Jacobs, her father's atelier, Vogue, and Dazed and Confused. Her first collection, inspired by Irish travelers and the mourning traditions of the Aran Islands, was shown last spring during London Fashion Week. She is showing this season in collaboration with Fashion East, an incubator for raw talent with such noted alumni as Gareth Pugh and Marios Schwab.
Why we like her: Simone's clothes are darkly romantic and conceptual with a hint on unconventional sex appeal. The interplay on masculine and feminine have garnered a following from the likes of Dree Hemingway and Romy of The XX. After visiting her grandfather's grave in Hong Kong, she continues her exploration of mourning culture in her spring 2011 collection: "[It] is inspired by the tradition of Chinese mourning dress and the stark graveyard itself with its floral highlights."
