Donald Glover Had a Lot of Thoughts About Anna Wintour at the Band of Outsiders Show
By fortune or misfortune (fortune, we say!) Community’s Donald Glover
Glover was so nervous, in fact, that he’d rushed off to Opening Ceremony before the show to buy socks and new shoes since he was worried the ones he'd brought from L.A. weren't quite working with his borrowed Band of Outsiders jacket. Then he arrived to discover that not only was he sitting next to Anna Wintour, but that she'd accidentally left her phone on his seat. “I’ve seen The September Issue. I watched The Devil Wears Prada,” Glover told us later at a dinner for the label at the hamburger joint Zaitzeff in the East Village. “I wasn’t going to ask Anna Wintour to move her phone!”
So he waited. And waited. “I was terrified of her,” he went on. “I love her. I think she’s great. But I was terrified.” Finally, he did the only thing that made sense at the time; he asked to be moved over one seat. “I was like, ‘Can I be the one NOT next to her?’ And they switched me so I'm one seat away from her. But the seat they fill it with is the little girl blogger! Tia?” Tavi? “Yes! Tavi! And I’m like, ‘That’s almost as bad!’” He started imagining the 14-year-old criticizing his shoe-and-jacket combination in her head. Also, “as a grown man, I could not talk to her.”
As minutes ticked by, Glover began to do what many of us enduring an awkward moment might have done: He began to Tweet, using the hash tag "#thingsItriednottodoinfrontofAnnaWintour".
His followers tweeted back, suggesting other things that would be terrible to do in front of Anna Wintour, such as quote The Devil Wears Prada. They also asked if she could “get it.” “I have this thing on my Twitter called #cangetit,” Glover explained. “Which is girls I think can get it. Like, if they wanted to have sex with me, they could at any point. So I got a lot of Tweets like, ‘Can Anna Wintour get it?’ And she totally can.” He imagined what she might say in bed: "This sex is derivative of your fall-collection sex. Try something new, and don't be so afraid to bite things."
Glover never did talk to the editrix. But his longing for her only grew, particularly as male models descended from the ceiling on ropes to start the show
