LAST SLIDE

Slideshow: A Decade of Emmanuelle Alt’s French Vogue Editorials

French Vogue's March issue, covered by model Saskia de Brauw, will be the last under the leadership of Carine Roitfeld. As the outgoing editor-in-chief prepares to announce her next gig (rumored to be another magazine editorship), her successor, Emmanuelle Alt, prepares to release her first issue for April, which Gisele Bündchen will cover.

Though Alt was an expected replacement for Roitfeld, neither is an expected editor-in-chief. Like Roitfeld, Alt made her name as a stylist before taking over French Vogue. She started at French Vogue in 2000, having worked at Mixte and edgy teen title 20 Ans. She rapidly became an industry "It" girl in her own right, a good friend of Carine (though now they don't speak), and a fixture of fashion people's "best dressed" lists. Alt also has styled ads and runway shows for the likes of Balmain, Chanel, and Isabel Marant — gigs she's pledged to give up to avoid conflicts of interest in her new role — which helped establish her signature rock chic style, defined by Karl Lagerfeld as "big shoulders, long legs, tight jeans."

Alt has said she has no plans to overhaul the magazine. But even so, her debut will undoubtedly be scrutinized by fashion obsessives down to the placement of every model's last strand of hair. In anticipation of Alt's first issue as editor-in-chief, we compiled a look back at her work for French Vogue. See a selection of our favorite editorials styled by Alt, dating from 2001, in the slideshow.
