Twenty-year-old Texan Britt Maren née Maren Stavinoha made serious headway when she opened for Alexander Wang's spring 2011 show last fall. Before her week was over, she modeled for Marc, Donna, and Michael, only to get eight inches of her long locks chopped and bleached by Guido before hitting the Balenciaga catwalk in Paris. Then came a stand-alone feature in Vogue (which is unheard of for a rookie) to working with Katie Grand for Love magazine. You can expect to see a whole lot of Britt this New York Fashion Week and beyond. Check out her new-model profile to see loads of on- and off-the-runway pics.
Tell us a little about your childhood.
I was born in Sweden, but I'm actually not Swedish. My dad is a doctor and was working there, so my parents lived there for a couple years. I was only there a few months before moving back to the States. I grew up primarily in Houston, Texas, and have two younger brothers.
How did you get discovered?
I started modeling locally in Texas during high school and only really came to New York occasionally in the summers. While still in school, I wasn't really modeling seriously, but more just for fun. I met with a scout from Women and just signed with them right before shows started last September. Everything has happened so quickly since then!
You walked for a slew of top shows. What's the wildest thing you ever saw backstage?
Probably before the Balenciaga show when a handful of girls, including myself, had our hair drastically changed in a matter of minutes. Some girls went platinum, some went black, and all of us got really great, shorter cuts by Guido.
We already saw you in spreads for American Vogue. What else can we expect from you in the coming months?
I actually just got back from an editorial shoot in Turks and Caicos. It was definitely my most memorable shoot. I also have some things coming out in Love Magazine, Allure, Japanese Vogue, and American Vogue.
You live in Chelsea, right? What are some of your favorite haunts in the area?
Barneys Warehouse is on 17th Street, and I love to hit up the sample sales. I love shopping at Chelsea Market, whether it's for fresh produce, raw food at One Lucky Duck, or the delicious brownies at Fat Witch Bakery. I also frequently go to the Greenmarket in Union Square.
Let's play favorites, what is your favorite:
Book? Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion. Or more recently, the Steig Larsson series Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Film? Virgin Suicides, Chinatown, Clueless, Reality Bites.
Artist? Lately I really like Sean Hayes.
Describe your style in three words.
Comfortable, classic, chic.
