You expect a Disco Valentine’s Costume Ball thrown by Patricia Field, Susanne Bartsch, and Kelly Cutrone to be drag-tastic, and last night did not disappoint. By 10 p.m., the dance floor at Capitale on Bowery was already scattered with go-go dancers, drag queens, and Bravo TV stars in tight spandex, pasties, sequins, boas, face paint, and feathers. It was as if an entirely new holiday was created something like New Year's Eve meets Halloween. With eighties tunes like “Karma Chameleon” and “Celebration” pumping, the dance floor was quickly full of men in thongs and women … also in thongs. Guests took advantage of the free delights provided by Belvedere, one of the event's sponsors, along with Trojan (who would have been proud).
The hosts soon arrived Field in a red-sequin hooded dress that showed off most of her legs, with matching sequin sunglasses and an orange-fur vintage jacket. Bartsch wore a black tasseled thong over a purple-lace bodysuit with a black-feathered cape to match her outrageous wig, raising the bar for the costume contest that would come later. We asked the pair for their Valentine’s Day plans: Field was vague, but Bartsch had something in mind: “I’m going to get it on with her; we’re going to do a threesome.”
At midnight, Field celebrated her 69th birthday with confetti streaming, and three topless girls presented her with flaming birthday cakes on stage as the crowd sang “Happy Birthday.” Was this expected? “I expect nothing,” Field says. “I just get on my surfboard and ride … and I’m a pretty good surfer.”
The party continued well into the night, and a grand prize of a $4,000 shopping spree was awarded (by a panel of judges that included Tabatha Coffey from Tabatha’s Salon Takeover and Real Housewife Caroline Manzo) to the best costume of the evening, a well made-up feathered man in drag, natch. The secondary prize, a trophy as tall as Bartsch, was awarded to a glittered-and-sequined alien couple.
