saved by the nineties

Vena Cava’s Show Notes Came in ’Zine Form to Remind You of Everything You Wished You Remembered About the Nineties

Rather than distribute a sheet of paper explaining their inspiration — the letter to anyone who will read it that are typical show notes — Vena Cava designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock made a ‘zine. Called Zina Cava, it encapsulates the best of the nineties, with contributors including Andy Spade, Kate Young, and Shipley & Halmos. References range from Zima to No Doubt to Saved by the Bell to Calvin Klein Jeans ads. It was a clever accompaniment to a collection that the young designers said they created while listening to Fiona Apple albums, inspired by what they wore in middle school. The only thing this ‘zine is probably missing, in fact, is Tavi’s birth certificate. Enjoy a selection of its pages in the slideshow.
